Newcastle Jets have prevailed against Western Sydney Wanderers with the full-time score being 2-0.
It was a shaky first half, but Newcastle should have been going into half time with at least one goal if it wasn’t for the incredible goalkeeping by Daniel Lopar.
The first chance came after Dimitri Petratos slipped in Jason Hoffman, but Lopar did very well to make himself big and deny Jason Hoffman.
The second great chance came from Nick Fitzgerald, who was looking for what would be a massive confidence booster with his first A-League goal in over a year, but who else but Lopar to stand in the way again, with another stunning save.
The Wanderers did have their chances in the first half, they had their fair share of corners and shots, but nothing as clear cut as those two chances for Hoffman and Fitzgerald respectively.
It was interesting the way the Wanderers were pressing, with the four highest players on the field making out a front four and pressing Newcastle’s back four.
It may have worked, but Newcastle was too calm and consistently found the three in midfield, which outnumbered the Wanderers’ measly two.
Bruce Kamau was consistently outnumbered when he got the ball on the right, but in the second half play opened up more for him, with some great Mitchel Duke switches allowing him to run straight at Johnny Koutroumbis.
The Wanderers had a clear cut penalty shout, where Lachlan Jackson appeared to make contact with Kwame Yeboah without touching the ball during the incident, but the penalty was cruelly denied after VAR checked it out.
Both two goals came within the last fifteen minutes, with the first one being a poaches effort from young gun Angus Thurgate.
Ridenton tried to square a cross from Matthew Millar, but Pirmin Schwegler intercepted. However, it was Thurgate to manage to get the first touch, sending an unstoppable left-footed shot past Lopar.
Play then completely opened up as the Wanderers attacked aggressively, as the gap between the two centre-backs was exploited again, as Thurgate found himself in behind.
The Wanderers defence assumed he was offside, which left Thurgate and a charging Petratos to come up against only the goalkeeper.
Thurgate selflessly squared it, allowing Petratos to get off the mark with his first goal in the A-League this season.
Overall, although the Wanderers had their chances, Newcastle deserved the win, and Markus Babbel has a lot of work to do tactically.

Newcastle Jets are coming off the back of another bye, which sees them only have played five games so far in this A-League season.
However, they are unbeaten in their last two, drawing at home with Perth Glory before stunning Western United away to win 1-0, thanks to a goal from Angus Thurgate.
On the other hand, Western Sydney Wanderers are coming into this game on the back of a disappointing yet exhilarating 3-2 defeat to league leaders Melbourne City.
This game was sparked by VAR controversy, and Markus Babbel was not happy with the refereeing, which he made clear after the game.
Before that, they lost 2-1 to Western United, and the week before that ending with a nil-all draw against Brisbane Roar.
Their last win was the Sydney derby, and if they don’t find a win away against Newcastle tonight, they will have been winless for the whole of November.
Newcastle Jets will be welcoming back Bobby Burns, Abdiel Arroyo and Matt Ridenton from international duty, which is a big win for Ernie Merrick.
The best news is they’ll get their main striker, Arroyo, back from his duties with Panama, and he will most likely be thrust back into his duty of leading the line.
Many Newcastle fans aren’t fans of Ridenton, and after Ben Kantarovski’s stellar performance against Western United, I can see Ridenton being shoved to the bench for this clash.
The big win for Western Sydney Wanderers is that they welcome back Matthew Jurman from injury, although he will most likely start on the bench having been out for a lengthy amount of time.
Prediction
I predict a 2-1 win for the Wanderers, with their class in their front line being too much for Newcastle’s leaky defence.
