Australia became the first team ever in World Cup qualifying history to win 11-straight matches with a 3-1 victory against Oman last week.
It’s a record the men’s team can be proud of but coach Graham Arnold knows that, historically, Japan is a step above most of the teams they’ve beaten.
However, Japan has had unusual struggles by their high standards this campaign and have lost two of their last three matches.
They’ll be desperate for a win tonight as they try and cling on to hope of automatic qualification.
The Socceroos also have the motivation to auto-qualify and win on Japanese soil for the first time. They also haven’t beaten Japan in any fixture for more than a decade.
While Australia obviously want to make it 12 straight wins a draw would also go a long way to ensuring the Aussies will qualify for a fifth straight World Cup.
After this game, the Socceroos will have three home fixtures and they’re currently on top of the table with Saudi Arabia.
“The Japanese no doubt have all the pressure on them because they have only won one game out of three,” Graham Arnold said in the lead-up
“Every time we step out on the field we expect to win the game … and we will do that again on Tuesday.”
