New recruit Kosta Barbarouses has booted Sydney FC to their sixth-consecutive A-League win, scoring the decisive goal against the Central Coast Mariners.

After assisting twice in last week’s 5-1 win over Brisbane Roar, the All Whites forward made no mistake after receiving a superb cross from right-back Rhyan Grant to put the Sky Blues in front just four minutes into the match.

Once Sydney FC had the lead, they didn’t let it go, recording a 1-0 victory.

It’s first versus eleventh on the A-League ladder, reigning champions Sydney FC hosting the struggling Central Coast Mariners looking for their sixth win in a row. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:30pm (AEDT).

Seven wins from eight games, an A-League-high 21 goals, the current golden boot leader in Adam le Fondre… yep, Sydney’s championship defence is going swimmingly.

Steve Corica’s men are flying, five wins on the trot opening up a commanding lead atop the A-League ladder, and their Round 9 performance against Brisbane Roar was arguably their best yet.

A 5-1 drubbing, including a hat-trick to Le Fondre to help him leapfrog Melbourne City’s Jamie Maclaren to lead the competition for goals this season, avenged their Round 2 loss to the Roar.

Sitting at the opposite end of the ladder, the Mariners haven’t been as bad as their 2-1-4 record suggests – their slump to eleventh is more to do with the fact that, as of the start of the round, they’ve played two fewer games than the tenth-placed Melbourne Victory.

Their most recent match, a fortnight ago against the Roar, was closer than it appeared, only a five-minute purple patch in the second half costing them points, but against a red-hot Sky Blues outfit, they’ll need to improve and drastically.

Prediction

You simply can’t tip against the Sky Blues at the moment – they simply tick too many boxes around the ground. It’s hard to see the Mariners even getting close.
