The first Big Blue of the season plays out when Melbourne Victory travel north to face Sydney FC at the stunning Allianz Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:45pm (AEDT).

Two of the most influential teams in A-League history meet to recommence hostilities, despite having lived very different seasons in 2021/22.

Sydney FC never really got going, the chatter around whether coach Steve Corica is the right man for the job grew steadily throughout the campaign, and in the end, fans were bitterly disappointed by the football the squad produced.

It was a very different story for Victory and coach Tony Popovic turned their fortunes almost immediately after an atrocious season the one prior. Jake Brimmer has blossomed into a fine player and with Ben Folami and Nick D’Agostino also maturing, the season ahead does look promising.

All eyes will be on Portuguese recruit Nani, as well as returning keeper Paul Izzo. Sydney fans will be keen to analyse the form of Slovakian Robert Mark and Englishmen Joe Lolley and Jack Rodwell will also be viewed with interest.
Adam le Fondre needs help up top and Lolley has been acquired to play that role.

There will be just as much talk around the new stadium as the action on the pitch tonight as domestic football returns to Allianz after an extended rebuild. Sydney FC will be hoping for a dream return and Victory out to ruin the party.

Prediction
Sydney FC look likely to need a few months to gel after clearing the decks somewhat during the off-season. No doubt, with pressure on manager Steve Corica, they will be hoping for a quick start, yet Victory look a more settled and better team at this stage of the season.

The visitors to win and perhaps by just the single goal.
