A-League Men action continues when Sydney FC takes on Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Derby. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:45pm (AEST).

Inside the top six heading into Round 6 of the competition, both the Sky Blues and Wanderers will have eyes on a Derby win to claim bragging rights and keep pace with the high-flying Melbourne City. Sadly, much of the narrative throughout the week has focused on defector Milos Ninkovic after his move to Parramatta during the off-season.

Sydney fans are promising some fireworks and a real statement to be directed toward the Serbian international and the home side has clearly labelled the midfielder as an “enemy” leading into the match.

Outside the personal stuff that should really be left out of what stands to be a ripping night at the league’s flashiest stadium, a brilliant game of football will play out, with form suggesting that the teams are relatively close in terms of performance at this early stage of the season.

Sydney FC are scoring, yet leaking goals at the same time, whilst the Wanderers stumbled badly last week against the Mariners in an embarrassing 3-0 loss that seemed out of kilter with their results across the opening month of the season.

The scheduling has been nailed for this one, with the league set to break for a month whilst the World Cup takes place in Qatar and a crowd of somewhere near 40,000 keen to have a final dose of A-League Men action before the competition re-convenes in early December.

Western Sydney have appeared much more resilient at the back, bar their Round 5 performance, yet sometimes struggled to move forward with fluency. New recruits Joe Lolley and Robert Mak have the Sky Blues looking promising in attack yet the damn wall needs some work before coach Steve Corica will be happy defensively.

There are some big inclusions of note, with Adam le Fondre back for the Sky Blues and Oliver Bozanic and Kusini Yengi included in the Wanderers’ matchday squad.

Prediction

This will be one of those nights where Australian football shoves its best foot forward and the Sydney FC fans will finally enjoy their new stadium in full flight. Sadly, an upset looms in what could be a cagey affair to start before it opens up somewhat in the second half.

Western Sydney 2 Sydney FC 1.
