The UEFA Champions League kicks off this week with 16 matches over the next two days. In today’s games there are some stunning clashes between Europe’s greatest clubs starting at 5:00am AEST.

Reigning champions Chelsea along with powerhouses Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all on display today. Join The Roar for live scores and an around the grounds blog starting from 4:50am (AEST).

The Champions League isn’t won in the first round of the Group stages but the big contenders can certainly start to make their lives easier by getting three points in the bag.

In Group F, most eyes will be on Manchester United. The Red Devils have a line up full of talent including returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo. But can Ole Gunnar Solskjær turn this team of champions into a champion team?

Group G is one of the most competitive in the competition. There are none of the really big teams and each of Sevilla, Salzburg and Lille will be thinking that they can get a number one spot to carry them through to an easier draw in the next round. With all teams playing tonight it’ll be interesting to see who can make the first move.

In Group H, reigning champions Chelsea will be confident of a home win over Zenit – the pair haven’t met so far in this competition’s history but the Blues are unbeaten in six games against Russian sides. No reigning champion has ever lost the first game of their defence at home, ever and it won’t happen today.

In the other Group H match up, many eyes will be on Juventus to see how they perform after an average Serie A season and without Ronaldo.

The final set of games today come from Group E and presents the mouth watering tie of Barcelona v Bayern Munich. Bayern are likely to romp home at the top of this group and with some question marks on a post Messi Barca, it’ll be exciting to see if the Spanish giants can put up a strong performance first game up against the Group favourites.

NO PENALTY!!!! Lille 0 – 0 Wolfsburg The ref has reviewed the footage and has over turned his original decision - it was a foul but it was an inch outside the box and so Lille will have a free kick.

CHELSEA WIN 1-0 BAYERN ROMP HOME 0 - 3 The two big games of tonight have wrapped up with wins for the defending champions and the Germans. Not hugely surprising results but the way Barcelona played against Bayern is the big story from that game - they were so so blah.

GOAL!! Barcelona 0 - 3 Bayern Munich Robert Lewandowski has another and Barcelona are in serious trouble. It was another nice finish from the Bayern striker - he took the rebound, steadied himself and then found his spot to smash the ball into the net.

SO LUCKY!!!! Barcelona 0 - 2 Bayern Gavi is very lucky to still be on the pitch - already on a yellow he slid in late on the Bayern player and took him high on the shin too. He gets away with it though - maybe the ref feels sorry for how poor Barca are tonight.

SO CLOSE!!!! Chelsea 1 - 0 Zenit Oh that was so close and Artem Dzyuba should really have scored. He's hurt himself and Edouard Mendy is struggling to - the striker stuck out a leg to try and get on the end of the cross and his touch went just wide. He and Mendy then collided and the keeper has come off worse. No malice at all but a nasty hit for the Chelsea keeper.

FINAL 20 MINUTES Just 20 minutes left in today's Champions League clashes. Bayern are coasting against Barcelona. Chelsea have finally broken down Zenit but will know they need at least one more. Juve are well ahead at Malmo but haven't been able to get another in the second half. Lille are still looking to overcome that VAR frustration and are pushing hard for a goal against Wolfsburg. Benfica are all over Dynamo Kiev but just can't get that goal they need.

GOAL!!!! Chelsea 1 - 0 Zenit Lukaku has broken the deadlock at Stamford Bridge!! It was a nice ball whipped into the far post and the Belgian striker leapt well above his marker to head the ball into the back of the net.

FREE KICK CHANCE!! Chelsea 0 - 0 Zenit Marcos Alonso curls in a nice tempting cross from a free kick into the Zenit box but the keeper is there to punch it clear and Zenit survive another threat. Can the Russians get a point from this game??

CLOSE!!! Chelsea 0 - 0 Zenit Antonio Rüdiger goes from almost scoring to saving a goal as he blocks a great chance from Zenit at Stamford Bridge. Good work by the Chelsea defender as he managed to get there just in time.

GOAL!!!! Barcelona 0 - 2 Bayern Munich Robert Lewandowski gets his 286th goal from his last 306 games for club and country! It was a great poacher's goal as a shot flew in, struck the post and as it bounced back into the 6 yard box Lewandowski was there to stick out a leg and put the ball into the back of the net. You have to say that the way Barcelona are playing and how weak they are tonight - that will not be the last goal for Bayern tonight.

Chelsea 0 - 0- Zenit Chelsea are creating more and more half chances - surely it won't be long til they get their first goal? This time it's Reece James who finds himself some space on the right and tries to whip it into the net but it goes just wide.
