Match result:

The Wellington Phoenix have taken another step towards an A-League finals berth with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Central Coast Mariners.

It was all Central Coast in the first half, with a Matt Simon penalty and Andrew Hoole giving the away side a surprising, but entirely deserved half time lead.

The second half, though, was all Wellington, as Krishna converted two penalties himself, while a David Williams bullet earned the home side the win in Andrew Durante’s 300th milestone match.

Jordan Murray had what he thought was the equaliser for the Mariners late in the game, but he was offside.

Final score
Wellington Phoenix 3
Central Coast Mariners 2

Regulation win for the Phoenix coming up, right?

Perhaps. The thing about confidence is that it can breed complacency, and while Mark Rudan has a lot to be proud of with his charges, he’s intelligent enough to know that they are one slip up away from a slide back to the doldrums.

So while Wellington should feel confident coming into this match, they will need to know that they will only win if they continue doing what they’ve been doing well this season.

With Roy Krishna in hot form up front, and Andrew Durante a rock down back, Wellington will maintain their good form if these two can continue to deliver.

As for Central Coast, well, what does one say?

The memes are doing the rounds at the moment.

Central Coast have not won in over 320 days, while Mike Mukvey is starting to look a lot like Tom Hanks from Castaway.

This team needs a win, and badly, and the hardest part is that it is not like Central Coast are that bad, they just are not consistently that good.

Take last week. Central Coast looked good for 20 or so minutes, leading in Sydney, but couldn’t maintain it, and got trounced.

How you reverse a trend like that is anyone’s guess.

Prediction
There is not much reason to think Wellington won’t get the win against the winless Mariners, so a home win across the ditch is the tip.

Wellington 3-nil.
