Match result:

Wellington Phoenix were deserved winners against Newcastle Jets as they took the match 4-1 courtesy of a David Williams hat-trick.

The first goal came within the first thirty seconds after some quick passing showed how open the Jets defence was. Williams got a one-on-one chance and he did not hesitate for a second. Williams dictated play and his hat-trick goal will go down as a contender for best goal of the season.

You have to imagine that was all she wrote for Newcastle Jets’ season. There’s little chance of them making up for a top six spot from here.

Merrick will have a lot of questions to answer as the Jets are now almost impossible for the playoff spot after making it to the finals next season.

Wellington are on the opposite trend as they go from 9th spot last year to 4th right now this season. Even without Roy Krishna tonight, the Nix showed their class and put the Newcastle defence to the sword which made it 15 goals in their last three games.

The fans are enjoying an amazing season and with performances like this they will be dreaming even bigger. Can Mark Rudan lead his team to a fairy tale ending?

Match preview:

After the long international break, Wellington Phoenix will be raring to go as prepare for their A-League meeting with the Newcastle Jets on Saturday afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 5:35pm (AEDT).

With only five games to go before finals, the sixth qualifying spot looks like it will go right down to the wire.

After a hapless start to the season, the Jets are making a last-minute dash and trying to nick that spot off one of the teams above them.

Wellington Phoenix are currently fourth but are still far from being a sure spot for the finals.

A win here would go a long way in securing that though, and it would be a phenomenal turnaround for the New Zealand team under Mark Rudan.

Newcastle Head coach Ernie Merrick will be desperate for a win after succumbing to Central Coast Mariners in the F3 Derby as they fell at the last hurdle to make the miracle comeback happen.

Currently five points behind sixth-placed Adelaide, a loss for the Jets here would make any chance at finals almost improbably if not impossible.

Before the break, Phoenix comfortably dispatched Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1 and they will be confident they can keep the good times going as they travel to Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium.

This game will have important meaning for both teams.

A win for Phoenix and they can look forward to the finals, while the Jets need a win to keep their finals hopes alive.

Who will come on top? Be sure to join The Roar from 5:35pm (AEDT) to find out.

Prediction
Wellington are on a hot streak this season and the deadly front three of Roy Krishna, Sarpreet Singh and David Williams will be too hot for the Jets to handle.
