We finish the New Year’s round of festivities with the Western Sydney Wanderers hosting Melbourne City, as both teams continue their early season quest for a Top 6 spot, live from the Olympic Stadium. Join The Roar from 7:50pm (AEDT) for live scores and a blog of the game.

The key here for these teams is all about consistency tonight.

Western Sydney, despite a few hiccups along the way, have played some relatively good football, though not with many rewards.

They played exhilarating football in the derby for nothing, and more recently even against Adelaide, for large stretchs the Wanderers were the better team, yet only managed to scrape home with a draw after Adelaide went down to ten men.

Western Sydney at the moment are getting good work out of the likes of Alex Baumjohan, Oriel Riera, and Kenua Baccus, so they will see this match as a great opportunity to match themselves with a high calibre opponent, and get a win on the board.

Melbourne City are in much the same boat.

They are playing some good football, but find themselves only in sixth on the ladder, while the Bruno Fornaroli situation continues to bubble in the background (the Uruguayan again remains nowhere to be seen).

Melbourne will themselves see this as an opportunity to put a bit of space between themselves and the pack, and will want to make a statement to those outside the top 6 (i.e. Western Sydney) that if any of the chasing pack are going to pinch a spot in the finals, it will not be at the expense of the Melburnians.

With Dario Vidosic, Luke Brattan, and Riley McGree all firing, Melbourne should like their chances.

Prediction
Purely because they are the home side tonight, I’m going with Western Sydney. They have a point to prove, and so far int he league this season, it is the team that has more of the backs against the wall type of mentality that has gotten the win.

Western Sydney 2-1.
