Fresh off a remarkable, controversial victory last week, Central Coast Mariners head to Melbourne to face Western United looking for consecutive wins for the first time since 2017. Join The Roar for live scores from 4pm (AEDT).
The extraordinary final minutes of the Mariners’ 3-2 triumph over Melbourne Victory in Round 14 had enough drama for a whole season.
An all-in brawl, a red card for the now-sacked Victory boss Marco Kurz and, most importantly, two game-winning penalties within 5 minutes, and Alen Stajcic’s men were off the bottom of the ladder and back in the finals hunt.
The result means the Mariners, incredibly, are just two points outside the top six, and victory over a definite finals contender in Western United would mean another massive confidence boost for the men from Gosford.
Two consecutive losses have taken some of the gloss off Western United’s barnstorming start to their debut A-League campaign, and now sitting mid-table with a 5-2-6 record, coach Mark Rudan finds himself at a critical juncture in the season as they head into their first match in 16 days.
A return to the winners’ list would keep them within reach of the fourth-placed Wellington Phoenix (21 points), and with Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United both struggling for form beneath them on the ladder, would give them precious breathing space in the race for finals spots.
While defeats to Melbourne City and the Phoenix in their last two games were concerning, the Mariners aren’t quite in those two sides’ class, and a 1-0 defeat in Gosford last November should give United plenty of incentive to turn the tables in Geelong.
With so much at stake, it’s hard to see the A-League newbies letting this one slip at home.
