Western United are taking part in their first Victorian derby, and while it’s Wellington Phoenix that are their true rivals at this stage, United know this is a historic game for them.
It’s also coming at the right time, right after Melbourne City’s humiliating 4-nil loss to Adelaide United in the FFA Cup final midweek.
Western United are coming off a 1-all draw with Perth Glory in a game where they’ll feel like they could have had all three points.
A win however will take them above City – both sides are on four points after two games.
Western United also know they’ll have to do well to keep fans coming back to watch them.
They won’t be playing in Geelong and Ballarat forever. They’ll need to give their fans a reason to travel for their games, and also the fans in Geelong and Ballarat to keep coming back.
Besart Berisha has good memories in Geelong and will be looking to add to that for his new club.

Everyone is wondering what went wrong in Melbourne City’s huge loss to Adelaide United in the FFA Cup final.
They played less than a week before the final and beat the Reds 2-1 – Jamie Maclaren looked as if he was going to be scoring goals for fun this season.
Instead City go into the game looking to find form, and they’ll have to do it against an experienced Western United side – when it comes to the players in their squad that is.
Prediction
Western United have the best player in the A-League – Alessandro Diamanti. The ball is on a string for him and he will be the key to victory.
But you can’t count out the firepower of Maclaren, who you’d back to find the net every game. We could be in for another fun encounter in the A-League.
