Horrible scenes as Brazil international sent off for response to alleged racist abuse

A Ukranian Premier League match is making headlines for the wrong reasons after Shakhtar Donetsk’s Taison and teammate Dentinho were allegedly subjected to racial abuse from a group of Dynamo Kyiv fans.

Taison, who has made six appearances for Brazil, eventually reacted to the taunts, giving the group the finger and booting the ball into the stands.

He was then seen in tears as players rallied around him.

The referee followed the first two steps of UEFA’s racial abuse protocol with the game stopped, an announcement made on the stadium’s PA, and the players taken off the field in the 77th minute.

However, for his reaction, Taison was sent off entirely when the players returned to the pitch.

“We condemn this kind of behaviour of the audience, we will always voice the support and protect our players,” Shakhtar Donetsk said in a club statement.

“We are calling on football authorities and clubs to stop racism in the stadiums.”

Dynamo Kyiv has denounced racism and agreed to help with any investigation, yet added, “We consider hasty the allegation of a predetermined guilt of the fans, when the investigation into the circumstances of this case has not yet begun”.

Shakhtar claimed a 1-0 win.
