Match result:

France has made a perfect start to the 2019 Federation Cup Final in Perth.

Kristina Mladenovic played a superb match against Ajla Tomljanovic and secured a straight sets victory in very quick time.

In truth, it was a non-event, with the French woman cracking forehand winners left right and centre and the Australian floundering with nerves and apprehension.

The final score line was an accurate reflection of the match and if Australian captain Alicia Molik intends to select Tomljanovic in the reverse singles, there will need to be some serious psychological repair done overnight. Don’t be surprised if Sam Stosur takes to the court tomorrow.

It was a perfect start for France and a nightmare for the Australians. Now it will be Ash Barty’s chance to level up the final with a win against Caroline Garcia in around 30 minutes.

Final score
Ajla Tomljanovic 1 1
Kristina Mladenovic 6 6

Without Cup success in 45 years, the Australian women go into battle against a tough French team in the hope of raising the silverware on Sunday afternon. The opening singles matches will be played today and should prove pivotal to the overall result.

After only recently being granted permission to compete for her adopted nation, Ajla Tomljanovic has been rewarded by team captain Alicia Molik with a singles spot in the opening rubber against Kristina Mladenovic.

Many believed veteran Sam Stosur would be a prudent choice for Molik, however, the impressive season of tennis that Tomljanovic has put together has seen her force her way into the opening days’ action.

Mladenovic and and Caroline Garcia will shoulder the entire load for the French, a tough ask in what will be a highly competitive and tense final between two very proud tennis nations.

Number one player in the world Ash Barty will take on Garcia in the second match on centre court today, with the local fans in Perth sure to be fervent in their support.

Should Tomljanovic snatch the perfect start for the Australians and Barty continue her golden run, the final could be all but over after the first day.

If the opening days’ singles are shared, the tension will only grow tomorrow when Stosur potentially joins Barty on court for the doubles in the deciding rubber.

Prediction
Mladenovic is a crafty player on both the singles and doubles court. Tomjlanovic can show mental fragility at time. Today, with the added pressure of the occasion, she may struggle to settle and the skilled Frenchwoman may prove a little too solid over the course of what looks like a tight match.

Mladenovic in three sets.
