The new wave of Australian men’s tennis is on show at the Sydney International when Alex de Minaur faces Jordan Thompson. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4pm (AEDT).

Ken Rosewall Arena hosts this interesting quarter-final clash between two of the bright young stars of Australian tennis. De Minaur comes into Sydney with a new ranking high of 29 and plays this event as the fifth seed.

The 19-year-old impresses all who see him play; with his steely determination and excellent wheels often cited as attributes that many feel a few other Australian male players need to acquire.

There will be no surprises in this one from the young Sydney-born star. He will rely on patience and stamina to wear down his opponent and Thompson will need to be prepared to spend plenty of time on the court if he is to prevail.

Now ranked 72 and coming off considerable success on the Challenger Tour over the last six months, Thompson is in reasonable form and looking for his first win on the ATP tour.

The 24-year-old from Sydney will be confident after two recent Challenger Tour victories in Traralgon and Canberra; he competed in eight finals throughout the course of 2018.

Both men would love a win and an advance to the semi-final stage where either Giles Simon or fellow Australian John Millman would be their opponent. However, they will also value the match conditions and the physical hit out; with one eye firmly planted on the Australian Open which begins next week at Melbourne Park.

Prediction
De Minaur should win this match. At this stage of the event, the chances of players losing unexpectedly begin to diminish and class begins to tell. Thompson will fight hard, yet the 19-year-old has the weapons to counter whatever is thrown his way.
