Australia’s Sydney International champion Alex De Minaur takes on Portugal’s Pedro Sousa in the first round of his Australian Open campaign for 2019. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).
After his superhuman effort in Sydney, De Minaur will be hoping for a gentle start to his Australian Open and a comfortable win against the lowly ranked Sousa.
At 140 in the world and coming towards the twilight of his career, the Portuguese has little Grand Slam tournament success of which to speak and has never been inside the top 100 players in the world according to the rankings.
His best results have been 3rd Round appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon and without a career title to his name, has already been overtaken in terms of tournament success by the young Sydneysider.
The world took note of De Minaur’s maiden ATP title in Sydney on Saturday night and his toolkit of skills looks capable of making him a future star of Australian tennis.
The big question for the Australian will be his ability to physically recover from the tough schedule he experienced in Sydney and Sousa might feel he has a sneaky chance of an upset if de Minaur is fatigued in any way.
Prediction
De Minaur should win this one in straight sets. He is in career best form, thrives in the heat and faces an opponent well below him in the rankings.
