Match preview:

It’s an Alex-off in the third round of the Australian Open as hometown hero Alex Bolt looks to make it two upsets in a row against German fourth seed Alexander Zverev. Join The Roar for live scores and our rolling blog from 7pm AEDT.

This time last week, 26-year old Bolt didn’t have a Grand Slam win to his name, but the journeyman South Australian has enjoyed an unexpected run of success at Melbourne Park.

First he took out one-time world No.8 Jack Sock in four sets in the first round, before a stunning performance saw him save four match points to knock out 29th seed Gilles Simon in a five-set epic.

The emotional triumph was vindication for his decision to return to the sport in 2017 after a year-long hiatus during which he played local AFL and worked as a fencer with his brother-in-law, and was the crowning moment on an excellent first few rounds for the Australians.

His opponent, 21-year old Zverev, has been hailed as the heir apparent to the dominant trifecta of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the peak of the men’s game, but he has so far struggled to turn his lofty reputation into Grand Slam success.

Despite being a force on the ATP Tour, highlighted by clinching the end-of-year finals in London in 2018, he has only twice made it past the third round at a Slam – and never at Melbourne Park.

Like Bolt, he was forced to do it the hard way in the second round, triumphing in five sets over big-hitting Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, but while the German certainly wasn’t at his best, his ranking of No.4 in the world isn’t for nothing.

This would be one of the great upsets in recent tennis history should Bolt emerge victorious – but with a vocal Australian crowd sure to be cheering him on, can a miracle happen?

Prediction
Zverev should really be too good here- players of his calibre just aren’t beaten by players of Bolt’s too often.

And the fate of Aussies Alex de Minaur and Kimberly Birrell in their third-round smashings at the hands of Rafael Nadal and Angelique Kerber respectively has definitely brought the home crowd’s expectations down a peg.

Bolt will fight hard, but Zverev has the class to prevail.

"I was surprised by how much power he has," Zverev says of Bolt. "If he keeps playing the way he's playing, he's going to be a top-100, maybe a top-50." "I'm a tall guy, I try to push my opponents around, and it all worked out well today."

Another Aussie bites the dust as 4th seed Alexander Zverev takes care of a wayward Alex Bolt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. It was an error-filled performance from the Aussie, with the first set punctuated by missed backhands and the second and third laced with forehand misses. A disappointing end to the tournament from him, but he's won a legion of fans with his wins over Jack Sock and especially Gilles Simon. Zverev was always going to be a tough task, and he did have him under pressure after breaking back early in the first set, but the German always had an extra gear and his class shone through. Milos Raonic awaits.

As Zverev prepares to serve for the match and a date with Milos Raonic, Aussie Alexei Popyrin leads 3-2 in the first set over Frenchman Lucas Pouille. Still on serve, but Popyrin is 0-30 up in the current game.

GAME BOLT Bolt 3 3 2 Zverev 6 6 5 Zverev shanks a forehand long of the baseline off an innocuous Bolt second serve. 15-0 The pair trade heavy groundstrokes before Zverev comes in trying to force the issue, but he can't do enough with a volley, and it sits up for Bolt to crunch the forehand pass away. 30-0 Bolt comes into the net and slices away a volley up the line, Zverev reaches it and tries a lob to the baseline at full stretch, but gets it just long. 40-0 And he holds to love, though probably too late, with a booming serve down the T.

Two sets to love for Alexander Zverev now, and the German is looking a class above a fighting Alex Bolt. The Aussie has been cruelled by a plethora of unforced errors, with his forehand looking very vulnerable in that set in particular. The German hasn't been clinical, but has won the majority of the big points to set up a commanding lead. The crowd's still with Bolt, but it seems doubtful that they can bring him back into the match.

Set 2 is won by Alexander Zverev

GAME, SECOND SET ZVEREV Bolt 3 3 Zverev 6 6 Bolt goes for a defensive slice on the backhand wing, but it swings wide. 15-0 Zverev comes up to the net a touch hastily, he volleys nicely once but the second volley just loops up in the air and Bolt sends a forehand winner away. Zverev made only a token effort to defend it. 15-15 Does Bolt have a look in now? Zverev's backhand finds the net. 15-30 Zverev roars in triumph as his serve is beauty, wide ace right to the line. 30-30 Break point for Bolt! Zverev misses an innocuous backhand, netting it trying to go down the line. 30-40 But he saves it in classy fashion, brutal 212kph serve out wide that Bolt can only send wide. 40-40 Set point for Zverev as another huge serve, 214kph down the T, is too hot for Bolt to reach. Ace. AD-40 Double-fault from Zverev! He's got the most double-faults of any man still in the draw, and it costs him on set point. 40-40 (2) Body second serve from Zverev, and it works perfectly as Bolt's cramped backhand is framed wide. AD-40 And Bolt can't save this set point as he sends a forehand long, Zverev roars out a "Come on!" He's up two sets to love and is looking the goods.

GAME, BREAK ZVEREV Bolt 3 3 Zverev 6 5 The German breaks, and will serve for the second set! The pair trade heavy groundstrokes and Bolt cracks first, framing a forehand horribly and sending it way long. Under pressure already. 0-15 Wide slider second serve but Zverev defends brilliantly to get ahead in the point, but the German errs by sending a backhand long of the baseline. 15-15 Zverev's return is right to the baseline and cramps Bolt for room, and he duly sends a looping, swinging forehand wide of the line. 15-30 Bolt misses his forehand again, maybe because Zverev's return clipped the net slightly, but he's framed it horribly again, well long and two break points for Zverev. 15-40 He saves one with a big serve down the T, Zverev's stretched backhand sails long. He challenges, but it's found the line bang on. 30-40 But he can't save the second! Good wide serve as Zverev almost off the court, but Bolt tries to do too much, goes right for the line with the court at his mercy and hits it wide. The German will serve for a two sets to love lead.

GAME ZVEREV Bolt 3 2 Zverev 6 3 Wide second serve from Zverev forces Bolt wide, the German then crunches the forehand down the line but Bolt returns with a lob, though that's all she wrote as Zverev steps in and crunches the overhead winner away. 15-0 Bolt defends with a series of backhand slices, and eventually Zverev goes for the jugular with a forehand down the line, but the spin Bolt puts on the ball keeps it down and the German only finds the net. 15-15 Great one-two from Zverev, forces Bolt wide before coming in and banging away a forehand down the line, Bolt gets there but only finds the net. 30-15 Too good from Zverev once more, forces Bolt wide with an inside-out forehand hit at pace, Bolt gets there but his lunging forehand going for the line only finds the net. 40-15 And he holds comfortably, a big serve down the T that Bolt nets with his return.
