Match result:

Ash Barty has responded to the thrashing that Ajla Tomljanovic took at the hands of Kristina Mladenovic in the opening singles and belted Caroline Garcia 6-0 6-0 to level the Federation Cup Final going into day two.

Barty was at her sublime best from the opening serve and Garcia stood little chance against a woman who is at the peak of her tennis powers.

With a major and end of season championship under her belt, Barty is as confident as a player can be. She used that attribute to annihilate Garcia in less than an hour, sending the talented French woman back to the tennis drawing board.

Day 2 will see Barty take on French number one Mladenovic in the reverse singles and either Sam Stosur or Tomljanovic battle with Garcia in the other encounter.

A deciding doubles seems likely, unless one of the Aussie girls can topple Garcia and secure the cup in four rubbers.

Ash Barty 6 6
Caroline Garcia 0 0

Australia’s World No.1 Ash Barty will take on French No.45 Caroline Garcia in the second rubber of the 2019 Fed Cup Final. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting at approximately 3:30pm AEDT.

23-year-old Barty has enjoyed the best year of her professional career to date so far in 2019, recording some of the best achievements a player could hope to in the sport.

She broke through for her first ever grand slam singles title at the French Open, and in doing so managed to secure a position as World No.1, which she will take through into the 2020 season.

Barty also just last week took out the WTA Finals, defeating Elina Svitolina in the final, and now faces her next challenge – winning Australia’s first Fed Cup in 45 years.

She will go up against Caroline Garcia in the second of two singles matches today, with the feeling of this one to be shaped dramatically by the earlier result between Ajla Tomljanovic and Kristina Mladenovic.

Should Tomljanovic get a win for Australia then Barty will be able to put the hosts up 2-0 here and give them a near certain chance to take home the title on day two.

If the favourite Mladenovic gets up, Barty’s mission will be to level the scores going into Sunday.
