There is a spot in the Adelaide International final up for grabs tonight, as world no.1 Ashleigh Barty takes on American Danielle Collins. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7pm (AEDT).
Although both players would rather be playing each other in a semi-final in a fortnight’s time, the Adelaide International has had a quality field. To win this title would be a great way to start the year.
After losing her first match last week in Brisbane, Ash Barty has been slowly improving her game in Adelaide.
After a first-round bye, she edged past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets before beating French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova in easier fashion.
Barty won’t be seeking to reach her peak until the Australian Open, but her performances suggest she is improving with every match.
Danielle Collins has taken out some big names this week, not dropping a set in the process.
After victory against a qualifier in the first round, Collins beat Sofia Kenin 6-0 6-4 and then world no.7 Belinda Bencic 6-3 6-1 to book her place in the semi-final.
2019 was Collins’ breakthrough year and it all started with a semi-final berth at the Australian Open in Melbourne. She is playing on her favourite surface in good form. Ash Barty has a real challenge on her hands tonight.
Prediction
The head-to-head record between these two doesn’t tell us a whole lot, with Barty winning both of their matches on clay.
Barty has a game which can put the heavy hitters off their game by mixing it up, employing the best backhand slice in the women’s game and getting great angles on her forehand.
It won’t be easy tonight, but I’m tipping Barty in three sets.
Start time: 7pm (AEDT)
