Australian Ash Barty will be looking to create a slice of history when she takes on American Danielle Collins in the 2022 Australian Open women’s singles final. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm AEDT.

No Australian woman has won the singles crown since Chris O’Neil in 1978. Barty is also the first woman to reach the final since Wendy Turnbull in 1980.

There is some eerie history on Barty’s side. Four of her seven opponents from this Australian Open campaign (Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Danielle Collins) she also met on way to her first grand slam title at the French Open in 2019.

Much has been made of Barty’s lack of tough matches and whether it will affect her should this one go the distance.

All you can say is you’d much rather be in Barty’s shoes with just a few hours on court compared to Collins.

27th seeded Collins has had two matches go nearly three hours on the singles side and she’s also played three doubles matches at the Australian Open.

But the American does seem to be getting better each match including an impressive semi-final straight sets win over 7th seed Iga Swiatek.

Ash Barty leads the head-to-head between the two 3-1. They last met a year ago in Adelaide where Collins got the win in a tight three set encounter.

Will Barty be able to break the Australian Open curse and win Australia’s first singles title for 42 years? Judging by how her tournament has gone so far we might know in just an hour’s time.
