Two of the upcoming WTA stars will play the biggest match of their respective careers in the second semi-final of the US Open, as Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu go head to head. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 10:30am (AEST).
Andreescu has been having the year of her career, and while she came into the final grand slam of 2019 ranked just outside the top 10, that won’t be the case for long.
While she missed Wimbledon, her hard court swing back in North America has been phenomenal, capped by winning the tournament in Montreal in what was a stunning week for the young Canadian.
Even though she has at times battled her own fitness as she adapts to fulltime life on the WTA tour, Andreescu has been one of the fastest developers on the circuit and only dropped the first set of her tournament against the aggressive Taylor Townsend in the fourth round.
While the draw did open up for Andreescu nicely, she still had to cause an upset in yesterday’s final eight match against Elise Mertens, where she recovered from a set down to take the match in solid circumstances, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The win over Mertens followed another upset earlier in the tournament against another former grand slam champion in Caroline Wozniacki, who she beat in straight sets.
On the other side of the net will be 23-year-old Belinda Bencic, who may be more experienced than her Canadian counterpart, but is having the year of her life as well.
Up inside the top 20 of the WTA rankings for the first time, she has gone from high point to high point, cruising through the season with excellent play all around.
Her form leading into the US Open was strong, and she has continued that at Flushing Meadows, beating World No.1 Naomi Osaka on her way through the tournament, before easily brushing off Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals.
The winner of this match will advance to the final and take on either Serena Williams or Elina Svitolina in what will be a daunting task.
They have never played before this meeting.
Prediction
This is going to be a really intriguing semi-final between two players in fine form. Still, with Bencic holding a little more experience and match practice, I expect her to win a tough three-setter.
