The Australian summer of tennis is only just getting started, but early bragging rights are on offer this afternoon when Madison Keys takes on Karolina Pliskova in the Brisbane International final at Pat Rafter Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 3pm (AEDT).
World no.13 Madison Keys got her season off to a great start when she beat Petra Kvitova 3-6 6-2 6-3 on Saturday afternoon. The performance was even better when you consider that she was down a set and a break before fighting back.
Key’s groundstrokes have always been strong but her court movement was great in this match, eventually forcing Kvitova into unforced errors. Both players returned well in the final set but it was Keys who prevailed.
Aside from yesterday’s win, Keys hasn’t yet dropped a set this week, including against compatriot Danielle Collins in the quarter-finals and Samantha Stosur in the previous round.
World no.2 Karolina Pliskova survived a marathon semi-final encounter against Naomi Osaka, winning in three sets after being down match point in the second. Pliskova will take plenty of confidence from this win.
Pliskova was taken to three sets by Ajla Tomljanovic in her first match before a more comfortable straight-sets win against Alison Riske in the quarter-finals.
Prediction
Karolina Pliskova and Madison Keys have similar power games but Pliskova may have a little too much class.
This match will go the distance but I expect Pliskova to win.
