The US Open reaches men’s semi-final day, with Grigor Dimitrov looking to continue his surprising run back to the top of the sport when he takes on energetic and polarising youngster Daniil Medvedev. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6am (AEST).
For Medvedev, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for him to make a statement about his career trajectory in front of a crowd who have been hot and cold on him over the last fortnight.
While his on-court antics have brought boos and jeers, his on-court talent has been impressive in what has been an incredible summer for the unheralded Russian, who has risen to the top echelons of the sport.
He came into the US Open with the number five rank, which came on the back of back-to-back finals in Washington and Montreal where he lost to Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal, before he broke through for a tournament win in Cincinnati, only dropping a single set throughout the tournament.
His stunning form line has unsurprisignly carried over to the final grand slam of the year, where he has won matches, but at times looked anything but comfortable under the pressure of favouritism, something he has barely had throughout his career.
The 23-year-old, chasing a grand slam breakthrough, has had the draw open up for him with the eliminations of Djokovic and Roger Federer, and his aggressive style has had enough to get the job done again Feliciano Lopez, Dominik Koepfer and Stan Wawrinka in the last three rounds, all taking four sets.
While Medvedev is in the form of his life, what he doesn’t have is experience this deep into a grand slam, which is the opposite to Dimitrov, who played one of the best semi-finals in recent memory during the Australian Open of 2017, even if he did fall to Rafael Nadal in five sets.
Dimitrov has struggled with injury and form over the last 24 months, virtually since that tournament though, falling out of the world’s top 100 at various points.
He is back in there now, but nothing in the lead-up to the US Open suggested he was going to be on for a deep run through the tournament.
While he did benefit from a second-round walkover when Borna Coric pulled out, his last two victories – over Aussie battler Alex De Minaur, and more importantly Roger Federer – have been extremely impressive.
Getting the better of the Fed Express in five sets was almost a return of the old Dimitrov, who threatened for tournaments and grand slams regularly and his experience, as well as less court time and physicality of matches, should help him here.
Prediction
This is a tough match to split. Dimitrov has the experience at this level, and you just feel like Medvedev has to have the doors blow off at some point.

Well, and outstanding performance from Medvedev in the end. He was probably the lesser of the players during the first set, but got the tiebreaker as both players froze up. It seemed to free him up, and from there, the Russian barely put a foot wrong in what was a superb performance. He will face the winner of Matteo Berrettini and Rafael Nadal in the final on Sunday (Monday AEST). Medvedev... 7 6 6 Dimitrov...... 6 4 3

Dimitrov with a long point this time, then he tries to bring Medvedev forward, and the backhand back in behind is good enough from the Russian. Medvedev... 7 6 5 - 15 Dimitrov...... 6 4 3 - 0

Fault from Dimitrov. Longer point, and Dimitrov will force Medvedev to serve it out here as a forehand sails long. Medvedev... 7 6 5 - Dimitrov...... 6 4 3 -

Better from Dimitrov. Happy to stay in the battle and fight for that point, nailing a backhand to put it away. Medvedev... 7 6 5 - 15 Dimitrov...... 6 4 2 - 30

Dimitrov has really lost his way here, down on confidence big time. He does grab this point with a nice sliced backhand, but it feels like it's only delaying the inevitable. Medvedev... 7 6 5 - 15 Dimitrov...... 6 4 2 - 15
