The second round at the Brisbane International kicks into gear during the night session on Day 2 as Australian Destanee Aiava looks to pull off another upset when she takes on Naomi Osaka. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEDT).

Australia’s first real sighting of Naomi Osaka was probably when she dismantled Ash Barty in last year’s Australian Open. From there, she enjoyed a breakout season, with the US Open final victory over Serena Williams her finest moment, albeit bittersweet at the time.

At only 21 years, she is ranked No.5 in the world and, with her preference for hardcourts, we should be seeing a lot of Naomi Osaka this Australian summer.

Her form at the back end of 2018 was disappointing, with three losses in the WTA finals in Singapore in late October. However, after achieving grand slam success, a quieter end to the year was perhaps understandable.

This time last year, at 17 years of age, Destanee Aiava won her first round match in Brisbane and her ranking at the time, of around 150, was set to plummet.

It hasn’t worked out as expected as yet and Aiava’s ranking has fallen to 247 currently, with her form on the second tier WTA tour best described as patchy.

However, she has found her best form in Brisbane again, winning through some tough qualifying matches before defeating No.43 ranked Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 7-6 in the first round.

Prediction
Osaka rightfully goes in as a heavy favourite in this one and we do expect her to win in straight sets. The one thing in Aiava’s favour though is that she comes in match fit whereas Osaka hasn’t played a WTA match since October. If Aiava gets away quickly, we may have a massive upset on our hands.

I don’t think Osaka will let that happen however and expect her to win comfortably.
