After a relatively slow start to the clay court season by his standards, Rafael Nadal appears to have timed his run to perfection leading into the men’s final at Roland Garros.
Nadal has lost just the one set on his way to the final, with David Goffin taking him to four sets in the third round. From that point, he stepped up a notch, dismantling Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals before ending Roger Federer’s run in the semis.
The world No.2 seems most at home in Paris and it is difficult to see him getting beaten tonight.
If anyone is going to do it though, it might just be Dominic Thiem. The world No.4 is at his best on clay and he has wins over the big three on clay during this clay court season.
His run through to the final has been more troublesome than Nadal’s, taken to four sets in his first three rounds. From there, convincing wins over high seeded players, Gael Monfils and Karen Khachanov, led him to a semi-final match up with Novak Djokovic.
This epic lasted two days and was interrupted by wind, rain and an increasingly frustrated Djokovic. Thiem won out 7-5 in the fifth set in a match that lasted over four hours. Whether or not he will be affected by fatigue tonight remains to be seen.
Prediction
We do have a bit of history to go on when predicting the winner of this one.
They have played 12 times, 11 times on clay, with Nadal leading 8-4. They have played three times at Roland Garros, including last year’s final, with Nadal winning all three in straight sets.
Thiem will take some confidence out of his win over Nadal in Barcelona a few weeks ago, but Nadal has picked up his game since then.
He won in Rome just before Paris began and he has really looked a class above anyone else over the past fortnight.
