Both players will enter this match with high hopes of victory. With just six ranking places separating them, there should not be too much between them on the court or the scoreboard when all is said and done.
Tomljanovic enjoyed a solid 2018 and had two excellent runs of play throughout the year. She also became an Australian citizen. Playing in her eighth grand slam tournament and having progressed beyond the first round in all four of the majors, the 23-year-old will be looking to take the next step forward in her career throughout 2019.
What better way to start than with a victory against Konta today.
The Brit had a forgettable 2018 where, after an injury-riddled 2017, she failed to find the form that saw her rise to a career-high ranking of number 4.
That occurred in July 2017. Since, it has been nothing but a slide down the rankings for the Sydney born right-hander. That year she made the semi-finals of the US Open after playing in the Final at Melbourne Park in 2016.
Konta has pedigree, yet will need to recapture some better form to prevail against Tomljanovic in this match.
Prediction
Konta generally plays well in Australia and, for that reason, I feel she can get the win against the young Aussie today.
It will be tough, yet her experience might make the difference in what looks like being a three-set match.
