Well, that double fault to finish really summed things up. Far too many errors from Jordan Thompson today, as he goes down 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to Italian Andreas Seppi. He netted forehands, missed backhands and grew more frustrated with every error. Seppi was far from faultless himself, and even looked to be slipping in that third set, but one poor service game from Thompson was all he needed. An error-filled game, but Seppi will not care in the least. He'll take on either 5th seed Kevin Anderson or American Frances Tiafoe in the round of 32- Anderson is currently leading 6-4, 3-3 in that game. For Thompson, that third round appearance at a grand slam remains elusive.

Seppi moves a step closer. 0-15 And another mistake from Thompson, netting a simple backhand. 17th backhand unforced error for Thompson. Seppi two points away as the wind picks up. 0-30 Thompson receives a time violation! He's not happy about it, too, as the wind affected his ball toss. He recovers, though, a booming wide serve forcing Seppi off the court before crunching the forehand winner. The crowd duly cheers. 15-30 Match points for Seppi now as Thompson again struggles with the wind, netting a simple forehand. 15-40 And a double fault finishes it off! Anti-climactic way to finish, but Seppi won't care!

Thompson just starting to get fractionally on top here; a couple of safe holds of serve and he's putting far more pressure on Seppi's. He's looking the more likely of the two to make that break, but he'll need to deal with the pressure of this next service game. Seppi only one game away.

"Come on," cries Thompson. 15-30 Seppi saves himself with a good wide second serve, Thompson can only lob and Seppi steps in to whip the inside out forehand for a winner. 30-30 Thompson slams his racquet into the ground in frustration as he sends he forehand long. He's got to take chances like these if he want to take the set. 40-30 And Seppi finishes it off with a wide ace. Survived a scare, but now Thompson must serve to stay in the Australian Open.

Thompson's serving improving here- can he take it to a tie-break?

Thompson returns deep but Seppi whips away a beautiful forehand down the line, with Thompson wrong-footed. 30-0 Wide serve that Thompson can only forehand wide at full stretch. 40-0 Love game for Seppi as he forces the short return from Thompson with a wide groundstroke, then steps in and powers the backhand winner down the line.

Easiest hold of serve Thompson's had in a long time.

Deep and powerful, and just wide enough that Seppi can only barely get a racquet to it! His first look at the serve in a long while. 30-30 But Seppi recovers with a big serve wide, Thompson's return is long. 40-30 And he holds on to retake the lead in this set, a big ace down the T.

Off the second, Thompson takes his chance to come up to the net, Seppi tries to pass but Thompson's low volley is good! 30-0 And a booming ace out wide! 214kph, his fastest of the match. 40-0 Great deep shot from Seppi forces Thompson into a lobbed return, it's well directed deep but Seppi steps around and crunches the forehand into open court. 40-15 Thompson hangs on, though, Seppi looks to climb into the second serve with a forehand down the line but nets it.

GAME SEPPI Thompson 3 4 1 Seppi 6 6 2 Great overhead smash from Thompson off a good lob from Seppi! 0-15 But he follows it up with two unforced errors, finding the net twice with poor backhands after defending grimly. 30-15 Good serve down the T from Seppi, Thompson's forehand sails wide. 40-15 And Seppi holds comfortably once again with an ace down the T. Hard to see how Thompson can force the break he needs here.

Not far from Thompson, but much too quick. 0-30 Deep serve from Thompson and Seppi errs, backhanding into the net much to his own disgust. 15-30 Thompson pumps himself up as a wide serve is backhanded cross-court past the line by Seppi. 30-30 Great from Thompson! Holds Seppi at bay with some good defence, Seppi eventually backhanding long. 40-30 Thompson furious with himself as a simple backhand goes awry. 40-40 Game point for Thompson as Seppi misses the line. AD-40 He takes the game as Seppi nets a backhand.

GAME SEPPI Thompson 3 4 0 Seppi 6 6 1 Thompson comes into the net off the second serve, but his forehand isn't good enough to do so, and Seppi crunches the backhand pass down the line. 15-0 An ace down the T- Seppi's serving continues to be excellent. 30-0 Too good from Seppi, gets Thompson wide with a good serve before smoking the winner into open court. 40-0 Lucky for Seppi as his forehand hits the net, loops up and lands in.

Seppi moves to a two-set lead here, and Thompson is looking thoroughly outmatched. Seppi hasn't been faultless, but his serving picked up in that set, and he was able to put pressure on the Thompson serve that the Aussie couldn't replicate. It always looked like Seppi would break, and eventually, he did in the final game.

GAME, SECOND SET SEPPI Thompson 3 4 Seppi 6 6 Good wide serve from Thompson, Seppi gets a racquet to it but little else. 15-0 Poor backhand from Thompson after another series of groundstrokes, mistimes it badly and it slams into the bottom half of the net. 15-15 Outstanding point, but Thompson cracks! Comes up to the net, but Seppi's lob is perfect, though Thompson's over-the-shoulder return is just as good! Then he has Seppi running around the court, before missing the easiest shot of the point- a forehand into the net! 15-30 Thompson sends a backhand wide after a good shot from Seppi right to his bootlaces. Set points for Seppi now. 15-40 And he gets it on the first go! Thompson again rushes the net looking to impose himself, but can't do enough with the first volley, and Seppi's cross-court backhand is good for the pass! Seppi leads two sets to love, and he's looking in great shape.

Once more down the T, and once more Thompson can't get near it. 30-0 Great return from Thompson off the Seppi serve right at his opponent's laces, the Italian can only dig out a lob that sails wide. 30-15 Thompson makes another frustrating error, goes for the backhand winner down the line but miscues it well wide. 40-15 And Thompson errs again trying to force the issue, comes up to attack the second serve but can't control the bounce, sending his forehand long.

At least his serving has been good. 30-15 Great return from Seppi off the Thompson serve right to his feet at the baseline, the Aussie can only dig it out into the net. 30-30 Good serve down the T forces Seppi to lob, and the Aussie steps in and slams the forehand winner away into open court. 40-30 And Thompson gets a relatively straightforward hold, by his standards today at least, Seppi sending an inside-out forehand into the net after a prolonged rally.

Thompson hanging in there, but Seppi looking a class above. The pressure every time Thompson serves is immense- it seems only a matter of time before Seppi gets the break he needs to claim the second set.
