Matthew Ebden will be out to cause a huge upset at the Hopman Cup as he takes on Alexander Zverev in the second match of Australia’s tie with Germany. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10pm (AEDT).

Ebden has shown some good signs throughout his pair of matches at the Hopman Cup so far, beating Lucas Pouille in three sets first up and then taking David Ferrer to the post last night, but not quite getting it done in two tight sets.

Zverev will be a challenge on a different level, but Ebden’s tenacity and determination to defend and extend points when it seems lost could frustrate Zverev, who is one of the smoothest players to watch on tour when on his day.

This match-up is really quite an intriguing one when you consider the respective styles of the two players.

While the Australian Ebden can slog from the baseline with the best of them, he rose through the rankings last year with his excellent court positioning, pace and vision, as well as the ability to volley with the best of them.

His best victories came last year when he had excellent statistics at the net, and there was nothing different in his first couple of games this year.

The problem for Ebden this time around though is that Zverev is also an excellent net player, but can also attack from the baseline.

Germany’s top player has the ability to turn defence into attack with the best of them along the baseline, and while he has had troubles putting away Pouille and Ferrer throughout the tournament so far, he ended up doing so pretty comfortably looking at the final scorelines.

Zverev’s consistency has often been questioned by his critics, and it’s something he must be better at in 2019 if he wants to finally crack the grand slam duck and compete with the best players in the world, rather than beating everyone else and then being the best of the rest.

Prediction
Zverev is the better player on paper and in reality. It’s obvious watching Ebden’s play he won’t go down in any match without a fight, but there would be a genuine level of surprise if he managed to grab a set in this one.

Zverev in straight sets.

GAME, SET, MATCH, ALEXANDER ZVEREV - TIE GERMANY Fault. The second sits up and is absolutely launched back down the sideline by Zverev with a huge forehand. That'll do it. Zverev has just been way, way too good this evening, outpowering Ebden in a big way at the RAC Arena to put Germany into the final against Switzerland tomorrow night. Ebden 4 3 Zverev 6 6

Both players at the net there. Ebden had no right to get there after a saving volley, but he then flicks it up over Zverev who reached up and sends it wide. Ebden 4 2 - 30 Zverev 6 4 - 15

Ebden looks for the serve and volley this time, but nets it on the run. Just didn't get in fast enough that time to have any sort of control. Ebden 4 2 - 15 Zverev 6 4 - 15
