Match preview

Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios will look to keep his US Open campaign rolling as he takes on Frenchman Antoine Hoang in the second round. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 7am (AEST).

The Australian has been at his usual cracking highs and enormous lows over the last month as he goes through the US hard court season.

One minute he was winning the next in Washington, the next being knocked out in the first round at Montreal, before he broke some racquets, lost a match and copped a mammoth fine for a stunning outburst in Cincinnati.

And yet, apart from some minor complaining by Kyrgios standards, he came out during his first-round match against Steve Johnson and played some scintillating tennis, getting the job done in straight sets over a frustrated local favourite.

When Kyrgios is at his best, there are very few players in the world who can beat him, and those who can struggle to get the job done, so on paper, this match should be a walk in the park.

But no Kyrgios matches are played on paper. They are played in front of real-life crowds, with real-life situations and every chance for Kyrgios to explode.

It makes him the most fascinating player on the ATP circuit to watch, but even an explosion shouldn’t stop him from moving to the third round of what is now a very wide open section of the draw thanks to the eliminations of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem in the first round.

There is a very real path for Kyrgios to go deep into the tournament, but he must take it one match at a time, and Hoang will still front up a challenge.

The 23-year-old, who is ranked just outside the top 100 players in the world, is much suited to the slow-moving clay court, and will need to find a way of getting the big Kyrgios serve back into play consistently if he is to stand a chance here.

While he has some challenger wins during the lead up to the US Open, he was bundled out at the first hurdle in both Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, only to come up with an upset five-set defeat over Leonardo Mayer in the first round in New York.

It was a gritty performance from Hoang, who spent over three and a half hours on court, but served effectively and will need to pick his spots well against the aggressive Australian to stand a chance.

Prediction
Kyrgios should win and win easily. You can never be sure, but he will be keen to get off court as quickly as possible and go to do whatever it is that Nick Kyrgios does during his non-playing time.
