We are in for a real treat tonight in the second round of the Australian Open, as the men’s No.1 seed, Novak Djokovic, takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the last 32. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 8:30pm (AEDT).

Eleven years ago, these two played each other in the Australian Open final, with Djokovic winning in four sets. So, when we say that this match is worthy of a final, we have evidence to prove it. It’s a real tribute to both men that, eleven years after that final, they are both still playing top level tennis.

The top player in the world, Novak Djokovic, returned from injury in a big way in 2018 – winning Wimbledon and the US Open, alongside two ATP Masters titles.

In a warm-up event in Qatar, Djokovic went down in the semi-finals to Roberto Bautista Agut. However, Djokovic is a master of timing his run perfectly in grand slam tournaments, and we would expect nothing different here.

Djokovic started this year’s Australian Open with a straight-sets win over American qualifier, Mitchell Krueger.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga missed most of the 2018 season with a left knee injury. He returned to the court in late 2018 with, admittedly, mixed results. Tsonga’s Australian summer started in Brisbane, where he knocked over Alex De Minaur on his way to the semi-finals.

Tsonga also had a comfortable straight-sets win in the first round, over the no.40 ranked Martin Klizan.

Prediction
Djokovic leads the head to head 16-6 and has won the last three clashes, dating back to 2014. He has also won nine of their last 10 matches.

Tsonga’s low ranking reflects his injury-ravaged 2018 rather than his 2019 form. This has made him a dangerous floater in the draw.

However, history tells us that Djokovic likes playing Tsonga, and I expect him to win in straight sets.
