The Hopman Cup will be decided in a mixed doubles match after the first two rubbers between Germany and Switzerland were split earlier this evening. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from around 10pm (AEDT).

In a rematch of last year’s final, Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic will attempt to defend their crown.

Federer has been at the top of his game all week and looks primed for another run at the Australian Open crown after winning the last two editions on the back of strong starts to the season at the Hopman Cup.

This could also be Federer’s last match in Perth, with his plans for next year still to be confirmed career-wise.

Bencic and Federer might be a formidable team on paper, but Kerber and Zverev are two of the best players in the world, and particularly Zverev, has an incredible all court game.

Zverev, while losing to Federer earlier this evening, hasn’t dropped a rubber all week in singles action and has been a good team with Kerber.

His huge first serve is a winner in the doubles game. Bencic won’t be able to return it for the most part, and Federer will struggle to get it back with any real velocity, making life substantially easier at the net for Kerber.

What we do know is that Federer possesses a strong serve as well and can pull off some incredible plays at the net, while Bencic has good court movement and pace.

In saying all of that, Switzerland did lose their mixed doubles game to Greece in the final tie of the tournament, which was something of a shock loss and, for the first time, they didn’t look on the same page as soon as they had the challenge taken to them.

Germany lost two of their matches in the mixed doubles, but even so, they were both close matches which could have gone either way and neither looked like they were substantially the worst team on court.

Prediction
Federer has been great all week alongside Bencic and dominated the doubles in last year’s decider. It would be a shock if, with Federer leading the way, Switzerland don’t manage to take it out again.

Switzerland in three sets.
