WATCH: Sam Stosur given fitting farewell after bowing out of her 20th and final Australian Open

Sam Stosur was defeated by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in the second round of the Australian Open but the result didn’t matter today.

It was a celebration of the Australian’s incredible career. In her last Australian Open and indeed last grand slam on the singles side, Stosur fought back from a set down to win her first singles match but couldn’t quite back it up against the Russian.

Stosur was honoured with a touching tribute at the end of the match and spoke about what the tournament meant to her.

“I’ve done more than I ever thought was possible,” Stosur said.

“I’ve had many great moments here and around the world.”

Stosur famously defeated Serena Williams in the final of the 2011 US Open which shocked the world at the time.
