AFL proposes top-10 draft countdown

The AFL is proposing a bizarre top-10 countdown among possible changes to the staging of the national draft. The draft might move from its usual Saturday morning scheduling to Thursday night prime time in late November.

It is understood broadcaster Fox Sports has put the proposals to the league, which briefed club football managers on the ideas at a Wednesday meeting.

As part of the revamped draft, the clubs with the top 10 picks would have a private meeting just before draft starts.

Starting with pick one, each club would nominate their selection.

They would then be held to those picks once the draft started with a countdown from 10 to one.

Once the staged countdown was over, the draft would then proceed as normal from pick No.11.

The league is also proposing that the draft be moved from Saturday, November 28 to 6.30pm on Thursday, November 26.

Given the nature of my work. I have to remain grounded and sensible at all times. Otherwise, I'd be writing nonsense about possible martian draft picks.

Ok Pip - I am not joking anymore. How about the up and coming Somali prodigy from the Commision flats. It all goes pear shaped when the producers decided to take him back to his homeland. The film crew get abducted and the ratings figures go thru the roof as we see the crew trying to explain Aussie Rules to their abductors by using the Somali kid as their translator. Will the abductors be converted to Aussie Rules and release their hostages? Will the AFL pay the ransom money? Now there is something I might watch.

Agree Pip, it's a young persons thing, poor ol Art is a bit old these days and perhaps spending too much time in his lab looking resplendent in a white coat. :-)

Jokes aside - in AFL states, a broadcast of the draft would be nearly as big as the Brownlow - not to mention you have the human interest stories (kid from Bunbury had to move to West Footscray; kid from a settlement 2,000 km away from the nearest phone, doesn't speak any English, joins Melbourne, etc)

Come on Redb - I like my football but that does not mean I will watch nonsense like Football Superstar on Fox or any other ridiculous, pointless programs that featuring sporting people doing things other than playing sport. I have amended the viewing figures for "AFL DRAFT CAMP" to 1530 as I forgot to take you and Pip into account. Steve - believe it or not. My projected figures are based on extensive bio-psychometric tests involving remote controls inserted up the sphincter of the subject group. This is done voluntarily by the subject, in case you got any funny ideas. This is a serious science :)

Don't agree at all. Ch 9 this year introduced a new football show called 'TAC Future Stars' which talk about football development, kids, the Under 18s comp, draft, etc. There is increasing interest in top draft picks , Watts, Rich, Naitinui are AFL fan household names already - it is a relatively new thing in AFL football and many ARE interested. Come on you broadcasters. We need more pointless and utterly useless content. How about an AFL reality program - "AFL DRAFT CAMP" Follow our budding rising stars as they prepare for " The Toyota NAB CUB Super Draft Day Showdown Spectacular" Who will win the beep test, jump higher, run faster? Tune in with another 1528 desperate people on Fox Sports 3 and find out!

True, but following the second flag we had a sudden fall. And look at our premiership teams, some very ordinary players inspired to greatness by Malcolm Blight (e.g. Aaron Keating - 7 AFL games, 1 AFL flag)

...and sometimes you don't have to wait two years - sometimes they're in the team for round 1.

this is precisely it - this is why it's compulsive viewing - it's about the future of your club - they're all just kids with potential at this point - about half of them will make a career out of it, the other half will barely get a game before dropping into obscurity forever. I'm not really sure what's questionable about it when pretty much everyone in the industry is for it. If it's questionable to outsiders, well, that hardly matters.
