2010 the start of an exciting new decade in Australian rugby

By chief / Roar Rookie

2010 is the new decade for Australian rugby, a fresh start, a fresh approach to the game of rugby. For a start, stepping up by Australian teams is a must.

The Waratahs have stood up to the challenge in recent years, and are fine where they stand.

The Reds have gone fresh, losing numerous players but winning a great coach.

The Brumbies and the Force also need to resolve a few issues with their team, but a good start to the year is key to attracting good crowds.

The Wallabies, too, will need to step up and show who they are. They need to step up in 2010 for some sort of chance to win the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

The wealth of youth in the Wallabies team is promising, but they must, and I mean must, step up against the All Blacks and the Springboks. They must prove themselves to the fans and the media.

2010 is a year for change: finalising plans for the Super 15 and finalising the broadcast deal. SANZAR cannot leave Free To Air out of the mix.

Let’s hope that this new decade of rugby can be Australia’s best. It’ll be hard, but they can step up and move forward and not just be stationery while the other Union’s are moving far ahead.

The Australian Rugby Union needs to make changes. Being so financially conservative isn’t the answer. We have to embrace the future of Australian rugby.

So all we need is: 1. Constitutional reform to the ARU to ensure more responsiveness, and minimise politics. 2. Free to air coverage for AUstralian rugby (i.e. Super games). 3. Increased revenue from the TV deal, which can be put into junior development. 4. Hold off AFL and league. And football. WHile we do this. Easy .... :)

RK, I think he should have said "“The Waratahs have stood up to the challenge in recent years (except 2009), and are fine where they stand (as long as last year was an abberation).”

"The Waratahs have stood up to the challenge in recent years, and are fine where they stand." Which Waratahs have you been watching? Hickey and not-so-Weismantel served up dross with the Waratahs driving its fans away playing 'ugly" Rugby. Crowds were down as were TV viewers were.

Mate, It could be a fresh start for Rugby in this country. The only thing holding it back is the same thing that has held it back for over 100 years and is unlikely to chage anytime soon. Untill a fair and truly democratic constitution is enacted and the current leadership actually wakes up to the situation and the demands of the fans rugby will continue to tread water.
