Fred and Maurice Tate are on this list - Fred's one Test was a bit of a disaster, with the press of the day putting much of England's loss on his broad shoulders. It is reported that he said, "it's okay, I have a lad at home who will do well", or words to that effect. He turned out to be spot on. E. Weekes and D. Murray is an interesting one...

A reader asked whether Pakistan's Test cricketer Abdur Rauf (currently playing in the Melbourne Test) is related to the Test umpire Asad Rauf. I replied that as far as I know they are not related. Can Roarers confirm or contradict me? But here is something I know: Vinet Gupte and Surinder Sharma from India umpired the third ODI between India and New Zealand at Delhi on 18 November 1999. They were the sons of former Indian Test umpires MY Gupte and Harprasad Sharma. Any instance of father and son umpiring a Test match in their respective era?
