How to keep NRL players in the game

By Nick the Rooster / Roar Rookie

In the wake of the Jonathon Thurston story about wanting to sign with the ARU, I’ve been thinking about incentives the NRL could use to keep players in the game.

My suggestions are:

1. the NRL pays a percentage of the salary of the top 32 players in the comp up to 300,000. These 32 players are made up of two from each club who are nominated by their club. For example, Brisbane may pick Lockyer and Folau, the Warriors may pick Mannering and McKinnon, the Tigers may pick Farrah and Marshall, and so on.

2. introduce a marquee player system, like the one the A-League has.

3. offer salary cap exemptions for players who been with a club for a number of years. For example, 10 percent exemption for players who’ve been with a club (in the top 25 squad) for five years and 25 percent for ten years.

4. give salary cap exemptions for local juniors. This may disadvantage some clubs, like my own Roosters, but it would also encourage them to spend more money setting up a local junior base.

5. pay milestone bonuses to players who reach 150, 200, 250 and 300 first grade matches. This money would go into the players Super funds for when their careers are over

Any more idea?

Jim You may recall the ARU tried setting up a trust fund approach to 'keep players in the game' ..... When Garrick Morgan walked to the Sth Qld Crushers he was told that he became ineligible to receive those funds. I think he challenged this in court. I can't recall the outcome, and Google hasn't really helped .... do any Roarers remember what happened? I'd be surprised if any organisation could deny any payments, even deferred payments, to someone who effectively resigns, whether to move to a 'competitor' or not. Food for thought, anyway.

Col the Bear. The only note of caution I would add, related to the NRL CEOS insisting on mainatining the status quo(16 teams) for financial reasons. Then again Gallop and co did leave the door open, when he proffered :that a submission which would bring in sufficient extra finances to the game would not be ignored(or something like that).Just bring in plenty of loot(we know the fan support is there),and it would be an offer too good to refuse. More teams mean more player opportunities, and less chancer to defect to the other codes.Imagine if Perth and CC were given the go ahead.Thurston may not then be looking at union. I trust the new commission gets up and running ASAP,and they negotiate TV and media and sponsorship contracts worthy of a proven TV rater(Rugby league). The bigger the pie the better teh chance of exapnsion.

to have the Central Coast Bears in, you'll see the locals get behind it, as it will be their team..someone mentioned earlier in this thread, admitting the Bears is just like bringing souths back and not expansion .. well the best thing the NRL would probably admit to(even though not in 2000/2001) was souths coming back into the NRL..the amount of positive exposure the Bunnies have bought to the game in the past decade, has been enormous for the code.. not to mention Russell Crowe getting Souths and RL recognised more around the world.. I have seen messages where CC supporters who now support, Knights , Manly, Tigers or other clubs would gladly switch to the CC Bears if they were admitted, as they would see them as their local team..and it's a way of keeping NRL players in the game as the header stipulates.. 2010 will be a big year for the CC Bears bid team. we're just getting started. so stay tuned, and get used to the CC Bears..because we're on our way back...and Rugby League will be better for it.. 1 million population without a RL team.. it makes Good business sense to have the Bears back in the comp.. and majority agree.......

Col the Bear. Noticed the same thing re my hols on the GC in Sept 09.No doubt there would be followers of other teams from Sydney, now "converted" to the local club. I noticed an NZ guy who flogs raffle tickets at the Broadbeach Plaza ,who for a few years wore a Warriors jumper.Last year he was wearing a Titans one.His comment to me.Gotta be part of the mob . There would be locals born and bred there with no other club allegiance. The former Giants/Chargers/Seagulls made little impact, maybe because they were not involved with the local community as the Titans currently are. What I did notice the number of young kids(titans jumpers) at the semi against the Broncos. One of the best family atmospheres i have expereinced at a game of NRL. Having a local team seems to bring out the tribal element:ENTER the CC Bears. I also believe the same thing will happen when the Perth Reds reappear on the radar.

Has anyone suggested the superannuation option? What I envisage would work something like this. When a 18 or 19 year old starts his career & his base pay is say $70,000 a season I would increase to $100,000. But the extra amount is locked away into a fund or trust that the player can access when he retires from the workforce not just his RL career -usually from 55 onwards. If the player misbehaves or brings the game into disrepute he forfeits this money. If he goes to union or any other competing football code he also forfeits this money (& the accrued earnings). So a player after several years in the NRL could have half-a-million or more accrued. It makes it more expensive for union clubs to recruit these players. They would have to a million dollars extra to cover the half-million tax free super loss. If the cost was about $20 million (a guess) a season it would seem good investment. If a sugar daddy or a media mogul came on board consideration could be given to backdating some of these super payments for representative players.

midfielder Agree to a certain extent on your points about football(soccer) retaining junior players.Let me suggest also, that in the 70s and 80s when rl was at its most "brutal;,there were many parents not willing to allow young Billy continue on in rl,or in some cases switch him back to soccer. Rugby league in the late 90s and early 21 century,is a far more sanitised version.Head highs penalised, stiff arms long suspensions, foul play(ditto).Nowadays girls play in the juniors. What has happened now that players more suited to the round ball game are sticking(many would not have made it IMO anyway),because of build ,and of course A League opportunities. That is to be expected ,but it simply means players that really want to play rl or whatever and are reasonably good at it,will still do so. As proof playing numbers have continued to increase in rl for the last 6 years at record levels at junior level. In effect other codes and their growth has had little or no impact to rl's growth. All that has happened is a much more competitive environment for the talent, and eventually it is horses for courses. It keeps all code on their toes, and due to past incompetent rl admin at times, that can only be a good thing.

Siva. This is a thread about rl keeping its players. You come on board like a pirate from Somalia, and want to turn it back to something else ie union v rl. I have put up with a lot of rubbish, false info coming from the odd ru fan(I was passionate about the game for nearly 6 years),but some of your efforts take some beating. .Reality check the Crusaders lost $800,000 in NZ last year in the S14 and the Reds lost money, and it was only a short time a go the Tahs lost money. Any rl follower who knows about rl,knows 1 club (the Boncos)and now possibly Sth Sydney makes money, the rest need to be propped up. So you are telling us nothing new. Then you make a childish comment keep rl in NSW and Qld only as your contribution. Getting back to the real topic and not a Siva ego trip,rl needs to pay international players (test andf SOO) bigger sums coommensurate with the staus of the event. This is where individuals or companies be asked or encouraged to throw in as a gold, platinum whatever sponsor of players.

RedB Out with his colt 45s smoking.Gunfight at the OK corral. A classic.Your comment about the myth of Roy Masters commenting about an NRL commissioned survey.Obviously for the next Tv contract in mind. Yet on an earlier thread you noted'even Roy Masters says such as such says it is wrong".From memory the GF TV ratings. You can't have it both ways.Either his comments have merit or they don't.Especially when he is prepared to admit his errors. It is simply an aggregate of people watching all rl games from intnl/SOO/NRL/under 20 etc against a lesser number of options with AFL. Dont' shoot the messenger if he is the bearer of possibly"bad news' or just the bleeding obvious.

It's no myth. The aggregate audience Australia-wide the NRL is the winner over the AFL. Sure the AFL games may go longer but the NRL regions command 60% of the Australian advertising revenue. So an NRL game over 2 hours is worth as much as an AFL over 3 hours. The ratings can be obtained from the OzTam & Nielson sites. http://www.agbnielsen.net/whereweare/dynPage.asp?lang=english&id=300&country=Australia http://www.oztam.com.au/html/ratings_guide.htm BTW the most watched team in Australia (of any football code) is the Brisbane Broncos with an aggregate audience of about 24 million. This is outstanding because several of their games are restricted to to Pay TV.

sound similar to many rugby league fans who put the other three codes ahead of union. i watch my nephews and families play league and im a member of my local junior rugby league club. i only have issue with other posters who lied about rugby union and if your not one of them then your ok.

I enjoy Union. Have been to plenty of games, played it at school, though Union in it's current state is poor on the field. I would choose League if I had to make a choice between the two though. Quite different to yourself, who puts every other sport played in Australia before League. Thus why you need to get a life, trolling League threads in case someone says somethign that may not be entirely true, just so you can feel smug, and ruin any enjoyments others discussing the sport may get out of the thread. You represent everythign that is wrong with this website.

I don't have a problem but I like to put those paranoia league fans into their places and bring them back down from fantasyland. I have no interest but I would have interest if I had to correct you and your mungoes friends. If you don't tell a lot of bull and mention rugby union I don't have to come on here.

Well Siva, League ain't going away anytime soon and Union isn't going to take it over anything in this country. You obviously do have a problem with League when you make statements like "I like afl and many sports and i support the west coast eagles. rugby union, afl and soccer are more exciting to watch than league." Suggests that you actually hate the sport. So just stay away from the League threads, and lets REAL supporters of the sport talk and enjoy it without your thoughts rubbishing up the League threads.

i use to play league and even represent samoa when we had to field a team to face the touring cook islands rugby league team as there was no rugby league in samoa. i have many nephews playing league and two played in the nrl. i have no problems with league but I do have problems with rugby league fans who are compulsive liars and often live in fantasy land . i would come on here a correct them if I had to even if I had to play their game.
