Passion v excitement in All Stars NRL Match

By ScottWoodward.me / Roar Guru

My mate Jeff reckons the NRL Indigenous All Star guys are “morals” against the NRL All Stars because they will be more passionate. The build up for this game, to be played on the Gold Coast at Skilled Stadium on Feb. 13, has been enormous and promises to be a sell out and a TV ratings bonanza.

I always enjoy a debate (or argument) with my mate as we are both opinionated and it is not easy to dig our feet from the sand.

I take Jeff’s point about how passionate the Indigenous All Stars will be and I am sure they will not require a pep talk prior to running on, but it is also hard to imagine that the NRL All Stars will not be revved up also.

For the first time ever and probably never to be seen again, the Australian Captain Darryn Lockyer and the Kiwi skipper Benji Marshall will play alongside each other. That prospect has even excited the composed coach Wayne Bennett.

“One of the exciting things to me is that they (Lockyer and Marshall) can all play together for the first time in their careers.

“I spoke to Benji recently and I’ve got to say that he was so excited about the fact that he would be playing with Lockyer and I know that Lockyer is excited about getting to play with him.

“Just those two alone, I just want to spend a week with them and enjoy their company and watch them play football.”

Given that Benjy was an automatic selection his club team, the Wests Tigers can field another player and we may have the prospect of English International Gareth Ellis playing which would be an added twist to this game, and a treat for his forward team mates who he was against in the recent 4 Nations.

I think the NRL All Stars squad of 20 will look something this:

1. Billy Slater
2. Jarryd Hayne
3. Israel Folau
4. Josh Morris
5. Manu Vatuvei
6. Darryn Lockyer
7. Benji Marshall
8. Adam Blair
9. Cam Smith
10. Petero Civoniceva
11. Anthony Watmough
12. Gareth Ellis
13. Ben Creagh

Others

14. Kurt Gidley
15. Luke Douglas
16. Luke O’Donnell
17. Alan Tongue
18. Anthony Laffranchi
19. Dave Taylor
20. Nat Myles

The Indigenous All Stars will need more than just passion for my mate to be right.

Springs You are correct about Gasnier being a poor defender, but the reason he got picked and Grothe didnt is because he is a class above.

Mushi you should back to Maroons this year as you seem to be convinced. I think the Blues will win the series this year.

If you just remember 2008 then Grothe is the worst winger in the NRL. We how bad he was, he was dropped for the whole season. 3009 is a different story, he has fixed his attitude, bettered in defence, is still excellent in attack and under the high ball. If you remember 2008 you will remember Gasnier continually coming in and leaving his winger stranded? I would say Gasnier is just as bad as Grothe in defence, yet continually got picked.

Scott the problem with Groethe is he always and i mean always comes in. he plants ths big legs and if he connects it looks good. the problem is some teams make him look very ordinary in that he far too predictable. 2008 against manly at parramatta stadium Groethe scored a barnstorming try but let four i repeat 4 in. His own crowd were ridiculing him. The pity is Groethe had very little coaching as ayoungster. just big and use his size and speed. You ask for a rugby league winger who does not always invariably come in but reads adefence varying his movements to the play and all you need to do is to go to parramatta's opposite wing and have a look at Burt. i will grant you that the grand final was groethe's best game for some time.

Last start winners? Wow who would of thought the performance of a different group of players in a dead rubber ten plus months earlier would constitute “form”. NSW went as well in that series as a retarded kid in his mensa entrance exam. Picking a team on the strength of their wingers and centres? You can have the “better” (as in not the Australian reps) team 1-5 I’ll take the team that’s got it 6-13

Hayne is massive gambler on defense it's jsut that we remember the successes not the failures

I'm pretty sure that was the City Origin team. Plus he might be more interested in music but has said he won't book any music sessions until parramatta's schedule is completely revealed.

Scott, EG Junior reminds me of the not so great Ian "Chook" Herron in defence, without the offsetting ability to kick goals. Eric often resembles a revolving door or a turnstile. He put the over in over-rated. Morris has surely got to slip into the line up.

Springs said | Today | Report comment Says who? Grothe represented in 06, why not 2010? People always say Grothe’s defence is his problem, but I challenge you to find a winger who doesn’t come up and in. Given, early 2008 Grothe had a serious problem. But Reddy and Robson have helped fix that. many times in 2009 he made the right decision to come up and in. You saw Hayne come up and in at the 4 Nations, should he not be picked? SPRINGS: I think he is more interested in music and I stand corrected but was sent home from SOO camp for being late for training.

Grothe has a major problem in defence as he keeps coming in and leaving his opposing wing unmarked, besides, he doesnt want to represent.

They had no luck to begin with in Game 1, but please, 18-2 down is their own fault. Game 2 they were terrible, while Game 3 they were excellent, yet QLD were not. Grothe will be right wing, his performance in 2009 (especially the Grand Final) was the best in his career and can actually start plays, unlike Morris who has only ever finished plays and been on the end of great backline/Cooper offloads/line breaks. I would say if Eels won the GF then Grothe/Reddy would have been in the 4 nations squad ahead of Morris. Burt or Reddy (being the most versatile) will be on the bench in my view. Grothe has played Origin in 06 and didn't disappoint. And I thought Tahu will only miss 1 game. Isn't the All Stars match counted? And Jenningsis great, I just think he isn't as good as Inglis/Hodges yet and hasn't really provedwhy he should be in the Origin/Test sides. I would rather him play for Tonga anyway.

Westy you may have mixed me up, I am biased against Cooper not towards. The Dragons are strong defensively on both sides which is a strength and a weakness. If plan A does not work for struggle with a plan B.

Springs overall in the series NSW went well and had no luck in game 1. I think the only person who you have got right in their positions is Morris and Stewart is fine so he will be 1. Grothe will struggle to hold down ist grade with Parra if Burt, Tahu, Reddy and Inu are all available. Tahu will miss ist 2 games and he has a long way to go to br considered for SOO. You obviously dont like Jennings. I think he is a star.

Jannerboyuk The differences are exaggerated but from my experience a centre in rugby league now perenially split is always watchful of the outside lines. In rugby league there is i think a greater propensity to try and beat a player on the outside .One does not have to fear as much about isolating yourself and losing possession. Whilst not unusual in broken play in rugby union it may lead you to isolating yourself from your support players . That is I think there is s greater propensity in rugby union to use inside lines to link up with supporting forwards to work over a defence . Rugby league seems to use the sideline to go to the outside a little more without the same fear of isolation. In rugby union this can lead to isolation and turnover without proper support. Again this is just my observation. ScottWoodward I think you are somewhat biased towards Cooper.it is not his side that is vulnerable in defence for St george.. in the semi finals it is Cooper who sets up morris. Once opposition defensive lines identified the deep running Kreagh he became much less dangerous. He did not have a good semi finals series.especially when it counted.

I must have. Cause you must be a optimistic man to say Game 2 was 'terrific'. The worst half I've ever seen NSW play. QLD had how many injuries? My backline: 1. Hayne 2. Morris 3. Cooper 4. Tahu 5. Grothe (If Stewart is in good enough form put him at fullback, Hayne to the Wing, Morris out)

Al, you can call me Scott. "Morals" is a word used in that context meaning the Indigenous team will win which was the view of my learned mate Jeff. I had the opposite view.
