Perth NRL franchise is making more sense

By M1tch / Roar Guru

Just under 9,500 people attended the NRL pre-season trial involving the Roosters and Dragons at Members Equity Stadium last week, the second year in a row that paid customers attended a Rugby League trial game out west in big numbers.

Throw in a near 16,000 crowd for the match between Souths and Melbourne, and it’s hard to ignore local support for Rugby League in Western Australia.

But it’s not only the crowds that should have people involved with the Western Reds or the NRL excited. It’s also the fact their SG Ball side (under 18’s team) is mainly made up of local born and bred players. The plan was if they were admitted into the NRL in 2013, they would have ready made players who are locals to engage with the community.

On the television side of it, it also makes perfect sense. The time-zone helps the NRL beautifully with Perth home games on a Saturday shown at 9.30pm live on the east; a great way to finish the current Super Saturday on Fox Sports. And a Sunday afternoon home game starting at 2pm local time fits in perfectly into the current 4pm timeslot.

Big blockbuster games against teams like the Broncos, Dragons or Bulldogs would be a great start to the weekend of footy for the 2nd Friday night game, and it’s always a bonus to have the game live.

The current Reds bid is the silent bid at the moment, but with everything the area has going for it, it’s the most important bid the NRL has to consider.

Realist No. Johnnydragons would be on a 2:1 work schedule. Meaning he works two weeks straight likely on 12 hour shifts with 1 week off. Meaning he only gets to play once every 3 weeks. They play weekly rounds in the Perth Rugby Competitions.

"Thanks John for the heads up about Armadale, maybe next season, going to stick with my RU Palmyra team this year though, nice and close to home plus only play once every 3 weeks (mine job life)." Are you saying the rounds are spaced apart by 3 weeks?

Talk about giving old Siva a hard time, he just stated the bloody facts, the teams keep changing all the time, its so frustrating. What ever happened to Canning Brothers as well. Thanks John for the heads up about Armadale, maybe next season, going to stick with my RU Palmyra team this year though, nice and close to home plus only play once every 3 weeks (mine job life). Go St George.

Very interesting post about hockey Bristler. I currently live in Raleigh North Carolina and the Hurricanes (NHL team) are pretty well supported, so I don't think you can necessarily say the expansion has been all bad. Obviously not to the level of the teams in the big northern cities but still well enough to win a title a couple of years back and be generally competitive (although this season has been a bit of a bust).

Lets remember also that League is getting underpaid by its TV deal. Channel 9 gets a great deal from league, we get them more viewers than any other code in Australia (for a national comp.), and yet get paid much less than AFL. And the Perth team is integral to RL getting a fair deal from TV companies. If RL had Perth, that means Perth would get coverage that is at least equal to Melbourne (hopefully much better), but that adds another facet to the expansion to Perth. Another thing is to look at other sports, NFL and NASCAR had weak support in the California region until they put a team/event there. Now they have great support from California. Even look at religion, they expand by putting a church/mosque/temple there.Presence is sometimes stronger than messages.

I think we need to put a disclaimer on league threads that there should be no siva samoa or union naysayers allowed.

Col the Bear Yeah right about Cronulla.A Chinese company Hisense involved in TVs/fridges and air conditioners now the major sponsor for 2010/11.It is a brand awareness exercise, and I read they now have 5% of the Oz Tv market.Toyota have also increased substantially their financial committment to the club. The club has had a 40% increase in ticket membership and about 116% increase in total membership. The head honcho behind the $110m development,is asking the council for a 1 year delay. He wants to change a few things on the development(which already has D/A consent) ,and in addition take advantage of an improved economy and tie it in with another huge development (residential) on the Kurnell/Cronulla area, near the Cronulla High school.. Of course I will be accused of PR speak. Cronulla will not be relocating to the CC,Perth,Hobart or the Falklands,as appears some would hope.

WCR Not a case of getting berated.I read enough articles in RLReview and the ARL over the years not just today, to get some idea of the state of the game in that state.I don't remember sugggesting it(rl) anything but a code with a small and battling presence, but a larger junior base than Vic ATM.It was in fact the ARL who stated that the junior numbers are back to Red's days. They have only 1 full time development officer, that I am aware of. I don't necessarily have to live in an area, provided I do a swag of reading on the subject to get an idea,of the lie of the land.eg the Gold Coast.I am aware of clubs folding, merging and a new club Bunbury coming in. They have an under 18 side competing with the other NRL clubs this year. What is the point,if there is no intention to seek admission to the NRL at a later date.A great exercise in futility?.Juniors cannot aspire to their NRL team,if they don't have one. Sorry I happen to be a realist, and don't expect miracles from a Perth side being established in the near future. The NRL is not going to (as Gallop stated),just put pins on the map,for expansions sake. The code has fluffed up before in doing so.It takes time and money. Rugby league has had a higher"profile"/ presence for a far longer period in Perth ,than Melbourne. So having a larger junior base is a given.Melbourne has really only pushed the code at grassroots level since about 2005,thereabouts at junior level, and receiving official VI=ic govt approval as a school sport.A few years development tends to put you behind a sport in situ for decades. That being said rl has experienced annual growth in that state, year by year. PR speak!!! all I am offering is an argument for having an NRL team down the line, not tomorrow.I trust you are not offering union speak . One suggests a consortium working behind the scene would have a better understanding of the status quo,the pitfalls, the potential and committed commercial support, than certainly you or me. A bit like the AFL and the GWS in an area where they are a very minor sport. If what I have stated above is completely incorrect, please advise me where I am going off the deep end?

seem to be the norm in perth for teams and clubs to merge when facing financial dificulties. i played for the cowboys before they merge and did a coup to take over the rockingham raiders. there were many league clubs back in my days and all look like most have gone under or merge.

Johnnydragons Having lived in WA for 3 years and witnessing the WARL 'development' program first hand they are not much chop. I'm likely to be berated by diehards like Crosscoder but its all just PR speak unless you have actually seen how it really is. Saying that WA has more juniors than VIC doens't really shine a positive light on both the numbers and development of VIC RL.

Cronulla just signed up another major sponsor.. they are rebuilding, as I keep saying no one is going to relocate... the Mighty Bears will be the Central Coast team and representing the forgotten and neglected league supporters from the North shore as well..!!!

Also i will add, if Brisbane can support 40-50 thousand crowds, for away teams, life is good, now a team in any area has to supply this support, our country is huge, so travelling fans are small. It might sound well and good to get 50 thousand to another Brisbane game, but what happens when Sydney teams visit that new team. ? Lets not wreck what we have. 1 city teams are fantastic for the game. Take a leaf from Sydney, 50 to 80 thousand crowds are rare. Once the Memberships get better, the city will do fine, but that could be 10 years off. Lets consentrate on t/v markets, this is the future.

BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, hope you all heard that, Perth is going to BOOM over the next 10 years, and if we wait until the BOOM is over, we might as well pack up shop, move to England, sit in our little boutique stadiums and watch northerns play a funny game called rugby league. For crying out loud, give me 1, just 1 person in charge with half a brain, just 1. Kerry Stokes might be our savior. 2 teams, no more, Perth and the Bears, forget Brisbane, Forget PNG, for now,!!! 2013, we need to annouce Perth and Bears back, not additions, Back in rugby league, in 3-4 years after that, every man dog his city state will be dying to be part of the NRL. Now i must pray, and mow the lawn. :( p.s, lets not overcomplicate things, its such a easy and straight forward expansion, nothing complicated, just common sense. This is why we need the IC,,,, before some fool in the ARL or NRL decides its a good idea to inject teams with no future growth. PNG, fine, but give them at least 7-10 years to get infrastructure in place, Central Queensland, fine but no real growth, Brisbane second team, Why, we have the coast as company, when the broncos have 40-50 thousand members, then lets think about another team. Also, lets refuse to move anywhere without a decent stadium. Why inject pain, when pain is not neccesary.

PaulJ The bigger the market, appears to mean the better opportunity to expose the"product to a larger number of people.Sky NZ pays the NRL $12m pa in amarket where union reigns supreme.I understand the Storm's jumper is worth $15m pa to the sponsors ,as far as exposure value goes .this in a city where the code is a mere footprint. Therefore Perth 1m plus ,i guess can't be ignored down the line. But as stated the CC,is so far advanced for entry, they could lob in tomorrow for NRL participation, and match it with the other Sydney clubs on just about every attribute.Hope that brings a smile to Col the Bear.

average league fan which were the 2 most important NRL clubs they would probably say the Bulldogs and the Broncos.... hmm i'm guessing you're a Bulldogs supporter. I think most people would consider the Broncos with that question due to their status of being the only team in Brisbane. As a Dragons supporter, I would say that their history, fanbase and famous jumper elevate them also... but then again a Souths fan would say the 'Pride of the League' trumps all.... Manly fans say 'what do you mean there's life beyond the spit bridge?', North Sydney fans believe the the most important club going around should be back in the comp any year now.... As for your more serious point about who's most important in the corporate sector. That's a toughie but I would have thought the Broncos would still sit on top of the pile as the sole team in a RL mad city. Considering that Melb get bugger all coverage in their own town I wouldn't think that they contribute much (apart from possible future investment).
