It's time to select a Wallaby fifteen

With the Super 14 competition in full swing, and for a change, having three of the Australian contingent actually vying for a finals spot, I thought in might be timely to start to shape up a Test 15 for the International series in June.

I think most punters would agree that it could be the most competitive for staring places for some time.

Given the Reds, Brumbies and the mighty Tahs are travelling well, there could be a few headaches for selectors when they select the squad and then start the process of trimming to a starting 15/21.

As lover of all ball sports, I’m really impressed with our player stocks at the moment. So here is my starting 15, sans bench, to kick off some fruitful discussion.

Wallabies
Adam Ashley-Cooper
Peter Hynes
Digby Ioane
Matt Giteau
Drew Mitchell
Quade Cooper
Will Genia

Stephen Hoiles
Phil Waugh
Rocky Elsom
Dean Mumm
Nathan Sharpe
Al Baxter
Stephen Moore
Benn Alexander

Any thoughts?

1. Robinson 2. Polota-Nau 3. Alexander 4. Simmons 5. Dennis 6. Higgenbotham 7. Pocock 8. Elsom (c) 9. Genia (vc) 10. Cooper 11. AAC 12. Faainga 13. Horne 14. Ioane 15. Hynes 16. Moore 17. Weeks 18. Mumm 19. Hodgson 20. Giteau 21. Chambers 22. O'Connor Giteau to cover halfback as well - no other 9's good enough to warrant using up a bench spot. Give some new blokes a go in 2nd row, leave mumm on the bench as he covers lock & blindside. Also can't think of any other 12's playing well enough to justify breaking up the red's 9, 10, 12 combination. You know what I realised when I was coming up with a team........for the first time in quite a few years there is pressure on the incumbents in almost every position. The only current wallabies who would be immediate selections would be the front row, Genia & maybe Pocock. Elsom is really not even the form 6 based on his last few games, but will be there somewhere due to the captaincy.

ACC has the safest hands in the business. him at fullback and Hynes to the wing and digby at 13. I would leave barnes out has not been playing well, Genia would play 80, but if injury should occur gits could fill that roll. Horne desevrves a place. Would give a place on the bench to a flyer like turner or Davies and allow the last spot for another loose forward

Hynes in the same ball park as Mitchell... who in their right mind is going ot leave out the leading try scorer this season

We also need some size and strength in the midefield. It looks more and more likely that Mortlock is gone. You cant have smal 10-12 combos IMO at Test level, they will get monstered both ways. We dont have any big 13s running around although Horne punches above his weight. He and AF would make a tough combination and Cooper would put them into some gaping holes. Ah I can keep dreaming, I know Aussie Bob will be conservative and give the incumbents all the favours. The RWC is won this year by Dingo, pick the right players now, not the ones who have been incapable of succeeding in the past. Next year its too late to blood the new kids on the block.

Jameswm, begrudging is not strong enough to describe including Notso in your team, any of the list you mention would be better and I would give it to Chisholm because of his experience (I understand Van H is not eligible). Notso is a chicken, what is wrong with young Hocking who does all the hard work for Notso at WF while he stands out with the centres. Wykes is also improving and Hand is a good tight forward. Mumm does need to roughen up a bit, maybe Douglas is the one to partner Chisholm (all this is until Horwill is back). We are blessed with good backs, with the possible exception of a backup no.9, Burgess has had his chances and is too slow and can't pass. I thing O'Young is worth a spot on the bench, or Valentine.

Hear Hear, Whats the bet though that Dingo will start both these blokes come the Tri-nations, maybe he will tinker with the line up in the June Tests but when the business matches come up I think they will be a little apprehensive about starting a deserving Fa'ainga

The more I see of Barnes and Gits the less I want either of them near the Wallabies. Gits maybe a bench spot. I am leaning more and more heavily to Fa'ainga being the best option at 12. The 9/10/12 combo for QLD has been outstanding. He hits like a train, can pass, kick and run great lines to bust open a defence. He might be raw but so was Horan! I admit I havent seen all of his games so would love some input from mad QLD fans about his continued form... The dual 5/8 combo hasnt worked for AUS and the Crusaders were blessed with Carter/Mauger. Its the exception rather than the rule imo, those types of players together dont come along very often and Aussie Bob needs to realise it sooner rather than later.

Barnes has done what exactly?

Having just watched Giteau play 10 for the Brumbies, Cooper is definitely the Australian fly half and Barnes is the inside centre. Giteau would be lucky to make the bench on current form.

Sorry, my oversight was selecting Beale. Should replace with JOC.

While I wrote an artcile a week ago spruiking a left field backline with Gits at FB, I don't believe it will come through. So my starting XV: 1. Robinson 2. TPN 3. Alexander 4. Sharpe (don't like him, but need some experience) 5. Kane Douglas (bolter) 6. Rocky 7. Pocock 8. Higginbotham 9. Genia 10. Cooper 11. Hynes/Mitchell 12. Barnes 13. Horne 14. Ioane 15. ACC Bench 16. Moore 17. Baxter 18. Mumm 19. Mowen/Hodgson - rate Mowen, but think Hodgson will get he nod as can cover 7 as well 6. 20. Giteau (can cover HB as well as any other backline posi) 21. Mitchell/Hynes 22. Beale

RUSTY - I like your Boks and ABs. Really fresh. The forum doesn't get much comment on the Boks, not enough on the ABs either. Let's hear more often from you.
