AFL needs to encourage player transfers

By kangaroo army / Roar Rookie

It was strange to hear the words of Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams saying that he won’t pick any players who are going to defect to the new Gold Coast Franchise, seeing it as a waste of time in playing these players who are moving during the season.

If you remember, Mark Williams joined the Brisbane Bears franchise as a foundation member. What is the difference in what he did and what is happening now?

The only difference is that he was looking at it in a different perspective as a player in the 1980s and now as a coach in 2010.

Is it a case of defecting or is it a chance for a player to move to a new club with a different challenge?

The days of being loyal are slowly going for players to play at the one club. If the offer is reasonable, why not? A player’s career doesn’t last long, so why can’t a player look to the future.

The NRL has had this player movement system in place for years now. Successful or not, player movement must happen.

Choco’s dead on the money for mine. If you’re in "the premiership window" and the departing player was in your best 22 then you’d probably have no choice but to play them. Clearly Port Adelaide are in a development phase at the moment so it would be downright irresponsible to waste valuable game time and development resources on someone who isn’t a part of your forward planning. I’m sure most clubs would have the same attitude. Also; you may recall that Chocos move to Brisbane wasn’t exactly all his choice.

Choco gets sourer every year. He's not happy in his job. You can tell by the constant sour look and stream of invective directed at everyone and no-one in particular. Grumpy ol' b@$%@&d.
