Central Queensland NRL bid gains momentum

By Laine Clark / Wire

Momentum is building behind Central Queensland’s NRL bid after state premier Anna Bligh committed to building a $140 million, 25,000-seat stadium if the team received the green light.

The CQ bid’s CEO, Denis Keeffe on Tuesday said he believed he now had a “compelling case” to present to NRL boss David Gallop after meeting with Bligh.

The Queensland Premier met with the bid’s bosses on Sunday to commit to funding a stadium – expected to be in Rockhampton – similar in size to the Gold Coast Titans’ Skilled Park.

Keeffe said the stadium guarantee eliminated their biggest hurdle.

He was now focused on completing the other main criteria demanded by Gallop – collecting 30,000 signatures by the year’s end.

However, he was confident after the bid team already gathered about 17,000 including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as “petitioner No.1”.

Mr Rudd has also promised to attend their first home game should CQ successfully enter the NRL.

“The onus is on us and the general community now to produce 30,000 bid members to back up this fantastic commitment by the very supportive state government and Regional Council,” Keeffe said.

The CQ NRL bid is considered favourites along with NSW’s Central Coast as the next teams to be added to the NRL as early as 2013.

While the CQ region boasts almost 20,000 supporter members, more than 6000 juniors and is the centre of mining resources, a lack of a stadium had been seen as a major stumbling block for the bid.

“The big box – the stadium – is ticked,” CQ NRL chairman Geoff Murphy said.

“This stadium commitment from the Premier is massive for the CQ NRL bid.

“It fulfills the main criteria that David Gallop spoke of when we talked in Sydney recently.”

Thats the problem Col, you cant create a 20 team comp, you would kill ratings. The only people watching CQ verses Perth will be a few perth supporters and a few CQ supporters. Plus you would have 10 games to sell, the t/v execs would just say, we dont want them. You need to be samrt Col, create demand from the T/V execs. You imagine what the t/v com[panies would pay having my idea. ??? 12 teams, only 6 games, mate, they would be falling over themselves to buy these games. Outside the square Col, remember Outside the square. This is why i dont think there is one rugby league person involved in rugby league clever enough to run our game. They are to involved in old school, bring a nerd in, he could make us millions.

Beautiful, absolutely beatiful. If you dont have a life. Mate, you need people to watch these games, now how are you going to get everyone watching lets say one NZ team playing a Pacific island team. Mate i am bonkers now watching as much league as i do. The problem the AFL is going to have also, who is going to be watching there extra games, mate i dont watch them now because they go for 3 hours. They can only play one game on a friday nite, anyone who stays up for there second game must be a insomniac. I know your intentions good, but we need less games, but better quality. Fox sports has 3 games saturday afternoon, i struggle to watch all 3 games, if it was AFL, i would only be able to watch one game. Rugby league is doing fine, we get to see 2 games friday nite because they dont take that long. If you want to start boring people, create a 20 team comp, watch the ratings die.

Well since everybodies talking expansion I'm going to reveal to you all my ideas for the future. It starts with NSW having the current amount of teams, but 2 will have to amalgamate to accomodate for the bears (possibly bulldogs & sharks or roosters and sharks). Queensland get 5 teams, add another brisbane team and cq or sunshine coast or what have you? Rest of Australia-4 teams, Melbourne, Canberra, Western Reds & Adelaide. also 4 N.Z Teams, Auckland, Central North Island, Wellington & South Island. Plus a team each for P.N.G & the Pacific Islands. This is 25 teams, each team play each other once over 25 rounds-which means 12 games a week so thats 3 on a friday (5.30, 7.30 & 9.30) (Oz time), 4 on a saturday (3.30, 5.30, 7.30 & 9.30), 4 on a sunday (1.30, 3.30, 5.30 & 7.30) and 1 game on mondays (or you could change it 2 on a friday and 2 on a monday or various other ways). Also in the future, there is a stand-alond rep round. And there is more games: kiwis vs kangaroos, country vs city, P.N.G vs P.I, Maori vs Aborigini & a S&WA vs ACT&Vic match. And the 3 origin rounds have more games aswell, SOO, N.Z origin (N.I Vs S.I or Auckland vs NZ), Rest Of Australia Vs P.N.G & East Pacific Islands Vs West. So far thats 25 regular season rounds, 3 origin weekends and 1 international w.e which is 29 regular rounds in the season. Now the change to the finals rounds is that 4 more teams will be involved-to bring the number of finals spots up for grabs to 12-top 4 get a first week bye while that next 8 battle it out 2 be the 4 challengers in the QF, then obviously the winners go to the SF and then the GF. Thats 4 final rounds to take the rounds amount to 33. Then you have the current 4 nations or shud a say the future 6 nations (incl. both the european cup winners and the pacific cup winners plus a wild card team in the winners between the losing grand finalists of both cups, this way means the European Cup, Pacific Cup & Wild Card teams will change every year to help develop the developling league nations). The future is very exciting isnt it?? I also know the future for salary caps but that is a completly different story. Until next time ROARERS....

The biggest problem I see for CQ, is the population split between Mackay and Rocky/Gladstone, it is still over 300km between the two centres, and is about the same distance for Mackay folk to travel north to support the Cowboys. Rockhampton will get the infrastructure, but they need Mackay's population and corporate weight, these two towns really are not that fond of each other either - this will be the CQ team's greatest challenge. I really hope this bid gets up though, it would be great to see the NRL reward real RL areas rather tipping money into some contrived franchise in a RL 'expansion' area.

manly is not a north shore team.. they are a northern beaches team.they will never be excepted on the North shore...Blue tongue has has had some of the biggest crowds the Souths/Newcastle games a month ago picked up 18.500 to the stadium..one of the highest for the round..the financial support is coming for the Bears.. and more is coming on board and more will soon be revealed.. CC couldn't support it on it's own, thats why they ahve to have the link with the North Shore and the heritage of the Bears.. CC has 300 000 pop the North shore has close to 800 000 combined thats a lot of people..without a NRL team to support, but the Bears bid team will rectify that if they can...

you see with Central Qld they also have a dissadavantage I'm pretty sure they never have hosted an NRL games, an advantage that the other bids have had and have continued to show..CC constantly draw crowds year after year, well for the past 10 years and Perth also have big crowds when NRL games are hosted there, even Adelaide got crowds when Sharks and Bulldogs play their games there... Gold Coast had Carrara to play NRL games at and got crowds.. this is what helped get them over the line..I don't know if the NRL could risk putting a team in the CQ without showing huge and consistent crowds and the only way to achieve that is if you have the stadium there..at the moment it's not and not likely to be unless they get the nod for the licence..

Well they already have Manly, and despite considerable off field success they have comparitively poor membership and crowd support....I am all for the bears (I am from North Qld but supported the Bears as a child) coming back, but I really hope that there is enough financial support and people support up there. Woolloongong, for example, would not now be large enough to support a team on its own without the financial support of the St George region. And I hope that the team would get more people to the stadium than the current games at Bluetongue - which are some of the most poorly attended in the league...

I think you'll find our business plan, will be second to none..if we can show we can sustain an NRL licence without burdening other clubs, or relying on handouts we may just have that compelling case to be entered earlier..and gees with the guys we have on our bid team ,I'm more then confident we will do just that...

2013 season at the latest.. I think the NRL want to stitch up the Central Coast.. I think they are a little tired of this dragging on..because they know we are not going away..the Bears supporters have kept the name out there..our submission goes in in March next year..I think you'll find the NRL will make a decision on the Bears mid 2011, or this time next year..David Gallop has said you need 18 months out to get your team going as the titans did.. 18 months out will be June 2011...unless of course a team falls over, which I have always said won't happen...

Col the Bear The CC will be the next team in the NRL, probably after the next TV deal, around 2015. The hot tip is Perth for the 18th team, to have a more national game to sell to broadcasters. I don't see Central Qld beating CC or even Perth. They'll be the 19th team after the TV deal signed in 2018. 20th team is anyones guess.

what you would achieve Oikee is having areas which are rugby league strongholds, which should be looked after at all costs..an NRL team on the CC would boost the coffers, and bring many people back to league.. was it Katie Page who said recently, the CCBears would reconnect the North Shore to rugby league again...with 2 teams added for the TV rights, it'll only be a matter of a few years after that before 2 more get added when the next TV rights deal come up..and possibly a 20 team comp.. thats when New guinea may come in..with another regional area..if central Qld don't get it this time, they keep at it, if Perth don't get it this time they keep at it if these areas want it enough they will keep fighting for it... The Bears have proven for 10 years that they want it, and they shouldn't be denied this time around..wellington walked away after 04.. the Bears stuck hard and kept at it..we will not be walking away again..

yes the AFL also have protected their heartland which is Victoria..as NSW will continue to do.remember the NRL originated out of the NSWRL .if Anna is so committed to the area of Central Qld.. then do your constituents are favour and build your stadium now..thats the thing, she's saying we will build a stadium on the proviso we get the licence...also it's easy to get petitions which people sign.. but get people to part with their hard earned cash as people have done for the Central Coast Bears with over 1600 now paid up in 5 months and it becomes a different story.. The CCBears bid team are going ahead leaps and bounds, with event calander booked for this year.. as i said our business plan will be second to none.. the problem with our last business plan back in 2004 ,was we put all our eggs in Singos basket.. it's completely different this time around..we are achieving our goals..and approx.100 members signing and paying up on weekly basis now..No i think we are doing all the right thigs this time around, connecting with the community, still as confident as we were day 1.. the CCBears will be there, just who our partner will be is anyones guess...???GO THE MIGHTY BEARS...

If rugby league tries to expand, for the next 100 years, it will continue to go backwards. Col, i am not talking about the bears, so dont get annoyed, this is all about the good of the game. We have many areas wanting to join rugby league, now, with common sense, someone in charge who has vision, we will be able to not only grow the game, but expand and deliver a comp second to none. You need look no further than AFL. The writing is on the wall for everyone who can see outside the square, take note, and go for it. 2 teams in every large city. 2 teams in NZ, the Bears and Central Qld or Townsville. All up making 12 teams, expanded to 14 when things settle down. Now, the second teir group will involve all other teams, the 7 Sydney teams plus maybe PNG. You need to work this out, i have not done the math. So the second division comp plays for a relagation spots every 3 years, working out the lowest teams over that period. So every team involved out of around 22-24 teams are playing for the grand prise, being involved in the top 12-14 teams. We will see the best players in the game, we can also follow the second group because we have a vested interest. And every area is covered, they all have something to acheive. Apart from not doing this, come 2020, nothing will have changed, we will still, or worse, have areas wanting to be involved, with no future. Now, remember that square, move outside, and look ahead 20 years, lets learn something from AFL. They know what they are doing. I think rugby league could do the same, if not better, but we need to be able to make the big decisions.

The CC Bears already have our stadium.and been sitting virtually empty for 10 years in the winter months... as I have always said.. don't mind who the 18th licence is just as long as the Bears are the 17th...our business plan, will be second to none...plus 1 million population..and 22 junior clubs...just for starters, plus an area which will be able to sustain an NRL side.. and thats the thing.. sustainabilty...to sustain it for 100 years and more..

What i cant understand is why the Roosters with so little support, so little Junior league dont amalgamate with Souths? Can anyone tell me why they are allowed to exist as they are? Thats one team cut and a team can be then had from elsewhere.

The stadium is massive news for that bid. The NRL keep saying Perth and CC but this may put more pressure on poor old Cronulla.

All seems a waste really, rugby league needs to expand to other states. Now is the time for the code to either chop 2 teams from Sydney and expand into all states. Really, we have been shown up for not growing the game around the country. I dont mind Central Queensland as a new team, but if we then have the Bears come back into the game, we have still acheived nothing, the game needs to finally expand into other areas. If you could chop 2 Sydney teams, then Perth Adelaide Central QLD and Bears could all come on board. Anyhow, thats my rant, i have been saying this now for 2 years. Nobody listens, typical league rant.
