Green fumes at dive by shameful Briggs

By News / Wire

A fuming Danny Green has threatened not to pay Paul Briggs a cent for the Queenslander’s farcical display in Wednesday night’s IBO cruiserweight world title showdown in Perth.

Briggs brought shame upon the sport of boxing when he was counted out just 29 seconds into the first round from a punch that only just grazed him.

Green was too devastated to speak to the media after the fight.

But the West Australian made his feelings clear inside the ring in his post-fight address to the angry fans.

“Guys just chill out, no one’s as pissed off as me, believe me,” an irate Green said.

“There’s not one more person in this room (that) is more jacked than me.

“He (Briggs) ain’t even a canine.

“Paul Briggs ain’t getting paid a cent.

“He dogged it, that’s criminal what he did.

“He ain’t getting paid guys, I’m very sorry. I can’t do anything more.”

Briggs was showered with beer by angry fans as he left the ring and fled the arena soon after.

The fight was only switched to Perth from Sydney at late notice after the NSW Sports Combat Authority refused to sanction the bout due to health concerns surrounding Briggs, who retired in 2007 amid rumours he was suffering neurological problems.

The 34-year-old declared himself fit to fight Green but it’s clear his only intention was to pick up a handy pay packet.

Green will front the Perth media at 1pm on Thursday (1500 AEST).

Knock out 1st round went from $12 to $1.07, .... THATS INCREDIBLE IN ANY BOOKIES LANGUAGE. Green camp must have known he was over weight and under done, they have spies at the oppposition training camp.

Cannot but agree with a poster above who said this will almost destroy boxing in Australia... makes me a bit sad when I look at past people like Jeff Feneck and Loniel Rose also Vick D (not sure of the spelling) etc .. who will no doubt see therir place in Australian sport essentially down graded as boxing slowly falls off the map...

It truly did stink like a mundine promotion. Instead of a refund the people in attendance should get to see Greens next fight for free and those that paid for a main event should get the same. It should also be remembered that commercial premises like hotels and clubs can pay up to $2000 for a PPV like this. 90% of people walked out straight after the fight which leaves a big hole in lost revenue!

It was fraud alright, and Briggs wasn't the only perpetrator. Start with the promoters who had the gall to call this a '...world title...' - Green was amongst that lot - no wonder he protested so much after the fight, he knew the crowd could turn on him. Also, if Briggs doen't collect his purse, that would result in a nice little trousering for Green & his cohort 'promoters' !!

It would amaze me if he were indeed knocked out. But even if this were the case... What was he thinking getting in the ring? No matter how you cut it, it was a farce all around. Shocking stuff.

A thai boxing coach I knew told me of a guy who would go unconscious whenever he was tapped on the top of the skull. He had to quite fighting and sparring. The top middle section of the head is a definite knock out spot (last place of skull to fuse as some of you may know who have babies) - not defending Briggs but there is a possibility that he was in fact knocked out.

You're quite right JManson - very well put indeed. It's sad and it spells the absolute death of boxing. To paraphrase Hemingway, boxing's collapse went slowly at first, and then all at once. This is the path of boxing's death. UFC is now unstoppable as it actually involves real, genuine fighting. But I prefer real boxing any day.

Yes, Ash. That was my point. I'm glad you got it. (Although technically, the nervous system, contains more than the brain). There is a wide range of evidence suggesting that Briggs has some sort of brain dysfunction. The evidence comes from a variety of sources, with a variety of terminology, but the issues all point in the same direction. His brain does not appear to be functioning correctly, so his former trainer convinced him to retire and the NSW Sports Commission refused to allow this fight. Lots of people ignored the evidence for their own reasons, to suit their own purposes. To blame the victim, is pretty stupid. And believe me, Briggs will suffer as a result of this, so he is a victim. Yes, there are other victims, but there are also people who've gained from this. These are the people to be investigated and perhaps blamed.

NSW banned the fight because they knew exactly what was going to happen. Green should have pulled the pin then, but no, he was running a circus show which was evident in his ring spat after the fight, it looked exactly like WWA, surprised the camera's didn't follow him back to the dressing room like thay do there. To also think that this guy continually bags Mundine for fighting nobodies and that he takes on the best. Worst part about this is as a blues man, I'm disgraced that they used him as a motivator for one of the SOO games this year, no wonder we copped a flogging!

Fox sports news said the cheapest ticket to the fight cost $59.95 and it was $49.95 on pay per view. I dont expect there'll be any refunds though because the venue and undercard have to be paid. I'm just glad I went to the pub to watch it and didn't fork out any of my own hard earned on a PPV.

Ptovey01, you're not basing your opinion of PPV fights on the garbage that the Australian networks put out, are you? The main fight is usually unworthy of PPV staus (fights like Mundine-Soliman have PPV status in Australia due to national popularity, not due to the relevance of the fights to world boxing) and the undercards are long and drawn out. They try to make up for the lack of quality by putting on more fights (rugby players and guys with 50-50 records on a PPV for God's sake??), so instead of having to sit through only three lousy fights to get to the main event, you end up sitting through around seven lousy fights. What's worse, the break before the main event is often ridiculously long. There bad PPVs from the US, too, but not even the same realm as those from Australia. If you watch PPV from the US or UK, you usually get to see 3 decent fights on the undercard, sometimes world title fights, before the main fight.

This youtube clip does show a bit more contact on the punch, but it's still a glancing blow and would be impossible to knock a pro-fighter out with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQpoPzd5Bcs Someone mentioned to me that Green was also the promoter. That's a disgrace. Stick to the sport if your a sportsman.

Jmanson, how can he have neurological AND nervous system problems? They mean the same thing. Anyway, Green was here for an easy pay day or he wouldn't have been fighting a guy who has been retired for 3 years and hasn't fought a tune up. Like I read on another site, the plan was to have him knock the crap out of Briggs for a while before the stoppage so I guess it didn't quite work out.

Initially after the bout finished i focussed all my anger at Briggs. However, today i can see the role that Green played in this. Why didn't he ensure that Briggs had a few warm ups fights where he could assess his condition? Why the rush to get the fight scheduled? Nine weeks is a short time for a long retired boxer to get into shape. A sad way for Briggs to sign off. He's deserved better than that.

Danny Green announced that Paul Briggs wouldn't be "paid a cent" but is he also ready to refund ticket costs to those who were there? He has to accept a lot of the responsibility for this. Briggs was clearly over-matched and only accepted the fight because he was apparently broke. Sure he dogged it by going down so easily but why is Danny Green fighting blokes who are barely able to keep their hands up?

Sad for Green. Anything that makes him look similar to that hack Mundine is sad. Needs to find the pay packets to fight the big boys cos he wont gain anything fighting hacks.
