Cannon to apologise to Springboks for 'clown' comments

By Jim Morton / Roar Guru

Former Wallabies hooker Brendan Cannon is in hot water for branding Springboks coach Peter de Villiers a “clown” and a puppet over his latest outlandish comments.

While Tri-Nations governing body SANZAR may censure de Villiers for suggesting South Africa were victims of a World Cup conspiracy in their two losses in New Zealand, Cannon has been forced to apologise for his response.

The 42-Test hooker will issue an on-air apology to the Springboks camp after ridiculing the coach following his extraordinary comments on Fox Sports Rugby Club program on Wednesday night.

“I’ve got my own observations about the last two Tests, and maybe I can’t say it in public, but we do have a World Cup in New Zealand next year and maybe it was the right thing for them to win the games so they can attract more people to the games next year,” de Villiers said.

A panellist on The Rugby Club, Cannon upset South African officials by belittling de Villiers and suggesting he was a puppet coach.

“I can’t believe that senior players like John Smit and Victor Matfield allow themselves to be controlled by this guy,” he said.

“He is a clown. He surely does not coach the team.”

Springboks spokesperson Anthony Mackaiser on Thursday delivered Fox Sports, a Tri-Nations broadcast rights holder, an ultimatum they immediately apologise or no longer have on-air access to South African players or management.

A Fox Sports spokesman on Friday confirmed the apology would occur at the start of Saturday night’s Test coverage at Suncorp Stadium.

“Canno will make a public apology when we open the coverage on Saturday night,” he told AAP.

De Villiers, though, remains on thin ice of his own with SANZAR investigating his comments, which have stemmed from his frustrations over refereeing and judicial decisions in New Zealand.

He’s been shaking his head at why northern hemisphere referees have controlled the opening two Tests which the All Blacks won comfortably after South Africa had men sin-binned early in both.

Lock Bakkies Botha was also suspended for the entire Tri-Nations for headbutting Jimmy Cowan in the 32-12 loss in Auckland while winger Jean de Villiers was banned for three weeks for a dangerous tackle on Rene Ranger in the 31-17 Wellington defeat.

De Villiers was particularly unhappy how Irish referees Alan Lewis and Alain Rolland controlled the breakdown in both matches.

Another Irishman, George Clancy, will control Saturday night’s clash with the Wallabies in Brisbane, where the Springboks haven’t won since 1971.

anyone who follows the boks knows how much of a student of the game matfield is. Cannon's comments that someone like matfield could not be taking orders from PdV is right on the money. and english not his first language? I've yet to notice any gramatical slip from PdV that would come from speaking afrikaans, or the too-correct wording that is a sign of someone speaking not in their first tongue. It's the ridiculuous ideas he spurts that gets him ridiculed

Photon, regardless of his home language, lets not miss the point - its what he says mate, not how he says it! The issue is not about his grammer, pronunciation or use of verbs, etc, it's quite frankly the tripe he preaches. As much as his defenders hate hearing it - he inherited the world champions from JHake White - period. He has ridden the crest of that wave and here's the bit that is really hard to defend - if he was such a wonderful coach, how come the team is getting worse with each new season? Why are they now getting thumped all over the park by the AB's, The Wallies, and my prediction is that most other Rugby playing nations are going to start dishing out pain and humiliation from here on out. That does not show him for being a great or even good coach. And let me throw some fuel on your racist fire mate, I think we have seen the best of SA Rugby - the "QUOTA" rubbish - which no other nation has to contend with, is starting to kick in and let history be my judge.

Of all the research into leaning @ is by far the worst. @ is Mr. Der and in an interview in a bus mag he admitted his leaning and he is not only a conserve but a ripe conserve. What is that got to do with Mr. Ball; it was to diffuse possible gal action. In the context of the rally Mr. Ball’s remark was entirely spot and any move by V. B. Thugby to have a gal battle in full medicci view is not even credible. Not so for @ they like attention to such tall and often leave out important tails on high views, usually misconstrue acts to represent something else altogether and can hairline complete supine positions.

mampara There's a difference between stirring the pot and a lowly dog of a comment. If you're confused " This comming from a bloke who ran over his son…" is a lowly dog of a comment.

Yeah, somehow I don't think moral equivalences work in this circumstance. It's like someone saying "Bush is a total m0ron that can't string a sentence together and I honestly can't believe he's the brains behind his campaign", and then you come back at the detractor by saying "yeah, but your son has a terminal illness that you didn't prevent." It's pretty clear who the d0uche is.

He really is a clown. In 2008 he had Jantjies (a lightweight nothing player against the Tri Nations) at fullback, now he's got Kirchener there another lightweight that only knows how to bomb. Where the hell is Francois Steyn?

choclit_bear You seem not to be able to grasp why he gets critised and why people don't believe he's running the team. You can scream it until you turn blue in the face but it has absolutely nothing to do with rascism. But just to sling a little bit of mud your way ( and sorry to every other South African poster here I didn't want lower myself to his level but still ) when exactly was Apartheid repelled. Considering we eliminated the WAP in the 50's and gave our indigenous population the right to vote in the 60's I think we have a better track record. Anyway. PdV is seen as a clown purely from the sewage he so consistently spews in press conference's. How can a man who has no public speaking ability with only a very loose connection between his mouth and brain possibly run a Professional team. Nothing to do with colour. You just bring it up because as much as you would like to deny it you know as well as everyone else what many have said it true.

Ah, but there in lies the rubb. Bushites argue that he in fact did a brilliant job, that he succeeded in his goal of preventing further terrorist attacks on the US. Now, we all know that's a stupid way to judge his presidency, but he considers it a success. Likewise PdV's side started off reasonably well, but during his tenure there have been some absolute catastrophes amongst the successes. Do you remember the end of year tour by any chance? When was the last time that any TN team managed to lose almost every match on a European tour, including games played against local clubs. That my friend is the Rugby equivalent of Katrina, and a blemish like that simply highlights his paranoid conspiracy theories and incoherent non-sequeters. It might have been alright had he got things back on track, but so far he hasn't. He's taken the success of SA's S14 teams and turned it into 2 embarrassing defeats at the hands of the ABs and has managed to accept absolutely no responsibility, instead choosing to suggest that it's all a big conspiracy against him. Sorry, but it seems to me that you're guilty of some serious double standards. Not that I'm surprised, after reading your comments (in which you label the entire Australian nation in all its diversity as being racist) it's pretty clear that you are the most racist one here.

well Pete, old Canno has been putting his foot in his mouth lately, his comments have attacked people at a personal level...you are demonstrating a curious Ozzy talent...ala Glen Mcgrath...happy to dish it out, but when it comes back..."thats low and uncalled for,"...the skirt blows up

mampara, that's low and uncalled for. I hope you're never in a situation similar to that which the Cannon family went though. I guess you don't have kids and know that its near impossible to watch them the whole time.

'You cant seriously believe the only reason people questioned George Bush’s level of control during his tenure as president is because of the silly things he said at press conferences.' People are incredibly shallow, conceited and have short memories. I doubt the majority of Americans could offer a paragraph summary of coherent thought regarding Bush's tenure, let alone the rest of the world. People are turned off by substance, and therefore turned off by real politics. The contrast between Mourinho and PdV isn't appropriate. Firstly, Mourinho has been consistently successful. PdV hasn't. PdV took SA to some dreary lows and opened himself to criticisms with regard to tactics and selection. Mourinho never left himself open to that criticism. Also, Mourinho's comments were often held aloft in the media, however as controversial as he has been he has generally erred on the right side of ridiculous and has maintained good relations with opposition coaches. Take PdV's tacit approval of Burger's gouging as an example of the differences between the men. Pdv has been the front for what has generally been an unpopular Springbok team. Unfortunately, he often compounded matters by appearing brash and making silly comments. I suspect that the reality is as simple and complex as that.

Dan You cant seriously believe the only reason people questioned George Bush's level of control during his tenure as president is because of the silly things he said at press conferences. The man some would argue was never elected in the first place, he presided over 2 wars one which was launched on what turned out to be an entirely false premise. Domestically he failed to regulate wall street resulting in the financial crisis and the Katrina relief effort was a disaster. If all that had gone well no one would make the leap from look how ridiculous his press conferences are surely it must be Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld etc who are really running the show. To further prove my point look up a man called Jose Mourinho, now this guy has made an art form of saying some really silly things at press conferences, but the teams he coaches have been very successful and i have never seen an article talking about how probably his assistants are the brains behind the success. PDV however has no such luck, a Lions series winner and already one of the most successful bok coaches of all time but for whatever reason due to the clearly ridiculous things he says in press conferences he is not about to be given any credit whatsoever.
