What do you call the new AFL rivalries?

By Michael C / Roar Guru

Last weekend, Port Adelaide pulled one out of the bag: a big win over a more fancied rival. And with their season almost spent, this win was akin to a finals victory. Why? It was Showdown XXIX.

And Port had just knocked off cross town rival, the Adelaide Crows, and dented the Crows’ finals aspirations. This is serious stuff. There’s even a Wikipedia page dedicated to it.

Over in Perth, as well, the Western Derby heads into its 32nd meeting, with the Eagles 18 so far ahead of Freo with 13.

These ‘home town’ rivalries are big interest and big business for the clubs and the AFL fixture is normally ‘fixed’ enough to ensure two per season, allowing each club a run as host.

The question is then raised about what the Gold Coast Vs Brisbane rivalry and the Sydney Swans Vs GWS rivalry will be known as? The Northern Derby? The Sydney Showdown? The Battle of the River Parramatta?
