Perth Glory shock the Melbourne Victory

By David Manuca / Roar Rookie

Perth Glory has won their first ever A-League game in Melbourne, with a 2-0 victory over the Melbourne Victory in front of 20,358 fans at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

Goals to Jamie Harnwell and Mile Sterjovski either side of half-time were enough for the Glory to take the three points. In what was a very fiery contest, the Victory dominated possession for the majority of the game but were unable to capitalize on their chances.

In what was regarded as Victory’s homecoming, Perth did what many teams haven’t, and that’s come to Melbourne with an attacking intent. The last time they came to Melbourne, they were thrashed 6-2 at the hands of the Victory, and Dave Mitchell didn’t want a repeat of that to happen.

It’s the first time the Glory has won an A-League in Melbourne, at the eighth time of asking, and they will be looking for a similar result when they travel back to Melbourne in two weeks time to take on the Heart. The win has moved them to the top of the table, at least temporarily, with one match remaining in Round 2.

Mitchell was gracious in his praise for Velaphi, who has been criticized heavily with several keeping howlers during the past two seasons.

“Last week Tando got hammered.

“Tonight he showed true class – he was outstanding,” Mitchell said.

Victory started strong and should have had the lead in the opening minutes. Adrian Leijer played in Surat Sukha, who got past the Glory defence and played a pass across the face of the goal, in which Dugandzic was only centimetres away from tapping in.

It was a hectic, end-to-end, opening and soon after Glory had their first chance of the game with Todd Howarth forcing Petkovic to tap over the bar with a nice volley.

Perth eventually un-did Melbourne mid-way through the first half when Steven McGarry cleverly cut the ball back across goal after a Robbie Fowler corner, where Harnwell was waiting to slot home from close range. The celebration was dedicated to his new-born son, Liam, who was born during the week.

“My wife was actually due tomorrow (Sunday) but she was actually induced Tuesday so she’s been pretty dedicated to the cause as well,” Harnwell said.

“Mitch (Dave Mitchell) gave me a fair bit of time off this week and when coaches do that for you, you want to reward them and hopefully I did that tonight.

“To score as well was just a dream come true. It’s been a huge week.”

Jacob Burns was lucky not to be booked, after a lunging tackle on Evan Berger in the 25th minute. It sparked a 10 minute period with tackles flying in from both sides, but the referee decided to keep the cards in his pocket.

The crowd was then furious when Grant Brebner was booked in the 35th minute, in what seemed to be a much more modest challenge in comparison with the others.

Melbourne searched for an equaliser but shots from Sukha, Leijer and Tom Pondeljak failed to tie the scores heading in to halftime.

Merrick made one change at the break, bringing off the lively Surat Sukha for Billy Celeski.

The change made little difference though, as Perth doubled their advantage in the 49th minute. Brebner made an error in midfield, which gifted the ball to Todd Howarth. While his pass to Fowler was cut-out, Sterjovski latched onto the lose ball and fired a shot past Petkovic from just outside the box.

For the rest of the second half, Melbourne lacked a cutting edge, and found it hard to carve out any real opportunities.

Their best chances in the second half were from a Carlos Hernandez free kick in the 74th minute, and a long-range strike from substitute Diogo Ferreira, which were both brilliantly saved by Velaphi.

Victory coach Ernie Merrick was happy with the quality of football his side played despite their inability to score.

“Our inter-passing was very good, our defence by and large was rock-solid, they had two shots on target of quality,” Merrick said.

“We just didn’t convert that quality possession into goals and you pay the price for it.”

Victory play North Queensland next Sunday at AAMI Park, whilst the Glory play host to Newcastle Jets on Saturday at nib Stadium.

I think everyone has said that Mitchell is the worst coach in the league - guess what, we are all still right.

Conceptually, however, it was with the team from the very beginnings. Tony Ising pictured a Bordeaux-esque 'V' on the kit from when he conceived the idea of "Melbourne Victory".

I wonder how all the Perth Glory fans feel about how they said Mitchell is the worst coach in the league.

I was about to give him a verbal bollocking - but what you say makes sense. Poor little fellow.

I have some sympathy with that view, although the Victory V is a bit different (and obviously nowhere near as iconic). But can you imagine the outcry if the AFL had attempted to defend its intellectual property? Also, it has to be said that in everyday discussion, the AFL has virtually let the concept of the "Big V" lapse (and Victorian football fans are as much to blame as the AFL).

Relax, Bill. Princeigor is a closet A-League and NRL fan who wanders on to get a rise out of posters in order to allow himself to return and satisfy his secret desires. Much like the primary school child who pulls the hair of the girl he fancies.

Why do you bring Melbourne Storm's attendances into the equation?.They have been playing for no points for more than half the season, yet have still achieved an average crowd in excess of 14,000 for the season to date!!!!

20,000 is a very poor crowd for the opening game at the new stadium. So far we have had the Storm get an average of only 10,000 (the same as at OP!) the heart 11,000 and now Victory only 20, 00 one would think the stadium would be runniat a loss to the taxpaer ATM Lets hope the crows improve otherwise the $300 million invested by Brumby will be wasted.

Excuse me but the "Big White V' belongs to the Victorian State Football team. It is AFL intellectual property.

The V was only introduced at the start of season 3.

Our home kit should always be the Big V, but I wouldn't mind if we alternated between the V and the sash every now and then. It's something no other A-League club does, or has done before. The sash as an away kit is not that bad idea I think, but the thing is like you say, the Melbourne Heart's away jersey has the sash as well. So, I don't think that will work. Some people have even been suggesting we use it as an ACL jersey. That won't work at all. As I said previously the Big V represents who we are and where we are from, so we don't want to be wearing a sash. Also, the AFC permit teams must have numbers on the front of the jersey, so with the sash there it wouldn't really work. They could put the numbers on the side like this years ACL jerseys, but it didn't look too attractive at all.

The A-League site also says 20,358, the papers say 20,358, SBS had the 17,000, but then edited their article to 20,358. Also being at the game, i thought it was easily 2/3 full. There was no official attendance announced at the game.

Agree with David The "Big White V" should always be a part of the Victory home strip, however, the TAC "belt" could be incorporated into the Away strip - although it may look as we are copying Melb Heart's away design.

I will agree, Angulo has not lived up to his expectations just yet. Apparently he's been ripping it up in training, but when it comes to matchday where it matters.... Hopefully though, he can pick-up his game and start to show us what he has to offer. The seatbelt shirts did look alright, but I am not too sure about wearing them for the whole season. Maybe if the sponsorship money was good, then yeah it might be worth looking into, but I think many of the supporters wouldn't like to see that happen. We are Melbourne Victory, and the Big V on our jersey is a large represenatation of who we are and where we are from. Who cares if it doesn't look good one one player? Maybe Kruse should get a smaller sized jersey.

Yes I was quite puzzled when an attendance of 17,000 came up. Atleast 2/3 of the stadium was full. The 20,358 figure seemed much more accurate to me.

ok, it was just that the 17,000 figure was announced on the screen when I watched the game. I'd prefer if it was over 20k as the stadium as a destination alone deserves it.

I noticed this as well. But that crowd figure has been posted on various websites including FourFourTwo and Fox Sports so I assumed it was the real figure. The A-League website only has 17k, but I was there and there was clearly more than seveteen-thousand people there.

I thought the crowd was announced at around 17,500. Still it is good to see Perth starting to fulfill some of their promise and also puts Fury's 3-3 effort into some perspective. Hopefully the Perth faithful turn out in droves once again for the Jet's clash. I thought Burns was lucky to get away without a booking int he first half however the same could be said for Brebner towards the end of the match who on more than one occasion was inviting a second yellow. It's shaping up early to be a fascinating season
