Who'll make the 2011 Wallabies squad?

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

After this Saturday night’s Bledisloe Cup/Tri Nations match against the All Blacks, and also the Wallabies Spring Tour of Europe, thoughts now turn to the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Even though the RWC is still 12 months away, Robbie Deans and his co-selectors will use the Bledisloe Cup/Spring Tour of Europe as ‘selection trials’ for potential Wallabies hoping to make it into the RWC squad.

The problem for Deans is that the Wallabies haven’t played all that well in 2010, not witstanding Australia’s amazing back-from-the-dead win in South Africa. Add the problem of not winning in New Zealand, with the Wallabies last win on Kiwi turf back in 2001.

Which players do you think would make it into the Australian RWC squad next year based on their 2010 form with the Wallabies?

good team, but i think that both oconner and giteau in the centres is a mismatch.. possibly a little on the small side.. ashley-cooper is a proven big game player..

Mortlock is also determined to break back into the squad next year. I don't like his chances but he comes across as a pretty determined bloke and I'm sure he will be giving his all in the S15 to prove himself. He could also be that experienced head that is often missing in the Wallabies backs.

Ioane and Higginbotham when fit will be in the starting 15. Robbie Deans will no doubt take a bolter or 3 for the Spring Tour & may also try a number of skippers & goalkickers in a group that I believe will contain 3 half backs & 5 props. Come 11 September, 2011, last Saturdays starting side against the AB (if all players are fit) may only contain 9 of that run on side.

Vickermann will be very lucky to make the Aussie RWC squad. He won't be available for this year's spring tour and will miss the S15 so exactly what game time does he have to prove himself?

I said at the end of S14 that on form Higginbotham should be picked ahead of Elsom. Obviously a problem as Elsom is the captain and couldn't happen anyway as Higginbotham was injured. But definitely could happen next year. Pocock for captain NOW!!!

McCalman will start at either 8 or lock for the Force. He played a lot at lock for them last year and did very well. He offers more in general play (if giving away a bit of height) compared to the other Force lock options. But I wouldn't be surprised if he'll unseat Brown at 8.

Agreed. 12 id JOCs proper position, but he won't get it until Gits heads to Europe. Agree KB is another good option at 12, but I think he has the potential to be a sensational 15. Has really tightened up his tackling and offers a lot more than AAC on counter attack. Just needs to work on his high ball reception.

James, I'm provided fresh bottled water daily, plus a selection of beef, lamb (hoggett actually) and chicken. That aside, if you think what's happening at the moment with selections will bare very similar resemblence to the 2011 RWC squad, you should share whatever it is you're smoking with the rest of us! Train smashes aside, there's no doubt many of the players everyone here have picked for their teams will be in the mix. However, if someone has a poor S15 season, you really believe because he was perhaps a starter this year he's going to be given a chance over someone who has had a blinder...er, no, won't happen. As I said, if the RWC was next month, the selections are probably fairly close to the mark. However, 12 months is a lot of water under the bridge and there will be some new blood and some will go by the wayside I suspect. Understanding what you wrote isn't the issue. It's your ludicrous assertion that 25 from this mob don't need to prove themselves in 2011 and are walk up starters 12 months down the track.

Parisien Vicks is the only one I'm not sure about. Palu I guess to a lesser extent. TPN hasn't had much time out of the game. They'll have all had (except Vicks) a full S15 season to find their feet and they are top quality players. Cattledog - everyone else understands what I wrote - I think you've drunk from the toilet bowl once too often. If you pick solely on form, you'd be the perfect selector for the NSW Origin team. Big Steve - I'm not sold on McCalman yet after that performance.

Here's one from left cheek, but think about it. Scott Higginbotham for Rocky Elsom. Why? 1> He's younger. Next year at the world cup he'll be 25 - Elsom will be 28, therefore more stamina for a loose forward 2> He's faster. He was faster than the Storm centres to score an 80 metre try in Super 14, and if he'd been in Rocky's shoes in the Pretoria test he would have probably got the try that Rocky didn't quite get. 3> He's bigger. Has 109kg v 106kg. All he needs is to get into the mix at test level and that will start with the Northern Hemisphere series & then the tri nations next year. See if I'm not wrong this time next year. Signed S.H.

Agreed, and that is why Barnes and his ability for taking drop goals could be useful.

That would be a very solid squad Jameswm but the big IF is whether TPN, Alexander, Horwill, Vickerman, and Palu are able to get back to their very best level after so much time out of the game due to serious injury or study in DV's case. If they can, and DV will have the least time to prove it, then its a very good squad with a good blend of youth and experience.
