Kiwis win against Aussies shows why sport is amazing

By SamFinn / Roar Rookie

I have just witnessed one of the greatest netball games in history. Australia and New Zealand fighting until the bitter end in one of the greatest battles I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

Even though there are thousands of disappointed Aussies out there right now, I can safely say that disappointment isn’t the feeling that takes up the majority of my headspace right now.

I feel privileged. I feel honoured. I feel sheer and utter pride.

I feel these emotions because I know first and second hand of the highs and lows of sport, and how much they can impact on a person’s future and how they go about living their lives.

Seeing Renae Hallinan and Nat Von Bertouch in tears reminded me that sport is the greatest instigator of human emotion on the planet, watching Leo Barry take that famous mark during the 2005 AFL Grand Final re-instates the fact that sport is art. Sport is poetry in motion. Sport is emotion on a field, a track, a court.

And watching events such as these fills me with passion and desire to perform, to have my moment in the sun, and then, to celebrate and celebrate well.

I urge everyone to get out and play sport, in any form, because the emotion that comes with success or defeat is one that should be cherished.

If it’s that good watching on the TV, imagine how the New Zealand Netball team feel right now and ask yourself, do I want to feel like that just once in my life?

Bloody Kiwis.

With regards to the Commonwealth Games, the greatest Kiwi victory over the Australians was during the bidding race for the 1974 Commonwealth Games. For the 1974 Commonwealth Games, there were 2 bids: Melbourne, Australia vs. Christchurch. NZ. Here's the result of the vote: Christchurch - 36 votes Melbourne - 2 votes. This is the greatest Kiwi victory over the Aussies!

I had only watched one game of netball before the final last night and that was the semi against England. I thoroughly enjoyed both.

Awesome. I think any Australia NZ has a level of expectation, but that game exceeded all my expectations.

yep, just outstanding, a cracking, absorbing contest that you couldn't look away from. A fitting finale to a memorable (for varying reasons) Comm Games...

It was one of those games that are completely exhausting to watch. The performances of the ANZ women in both the hockey and netball the last two days have been incredible - determination, competitiveness, aggression, fighting it out to the point of exhaustion - you would have to place both games at the pinnacle of women's sport - full stop. This is nothing new for netball between our two countries - we have a record of these close games going back at least 15 years.

Great game! Not in a patronising, 'great to see the girls have a go' kind of way, but a genuine great sporting contest! I was glued to the screen from the second half to the finish. Brilliant work under pressure from the kiwi GA, she was outstanding.
