NRL clubs to fly in and help flood areas

By News / Wire

The NRL community continued its support of the Queensland relief effort, with several clubs announcing they will fly to flood-ravaged areas and help with the clean-up.

The Parramatta Eels have united with fellow western Sydney clubs Penrith, Canterbury and Wests Tigers to aid the relief effort for the Queensland floods.

Eels players will fly into south-east Queensland next Tuesday for two days to assist with the clean-up.

Chris Walker, Carl Webb, Nathan Hindmarsh, Daniel Mortimer, Luke Burt and coach Stephen Kearney will be among approximately 20 Eels’ based in Ipswich, mainly helping out in the badly damaged town of Goodna.

The Panthers will be taking 10 players including Petero Civoniceva, Michael Jennings, Lachlan Coote, Travis Burns and their coach Matthew Elliott to Karalee, Ipswich.

The Bulldogs are determining where they can provide the same type of benefit but in a different region. They hope to have it confirmed in the coming days. The Wests Tigers are also confirming details.

Parramatta squad members will travel to Goodna, spending their time cleaning up debris and mud from streets and property, mingling with the community and helping with the clean-up for the local junior rugby league clubs.

The Eels will fly into Brisbane Airport on Tuesday morning before being bussed out to Ipswich by Ipswich Council.

Parramatta Chairman Roy Spagnolo said the club is keen to do whatever it can to help the people of Queensland through the floods and clean-up.

“I’m really proud of this club and the way everyone has pulled together to get the boys up to Ipswich to help in whatever way they can,” he said.

“Rugby league always unites in times of trouble and the Parramatta club are keen to help, especially given some of our players families were directly impacted by the floods.”

Good to see the Titans getting stuck in at Goodna as well. Apparently they won over a lot of locals with their enthusiasm and effort. Good job boys. Db, being a league fan myself, I don't think we should get involved with a tit for tat with the AFL people in this situation. Its not the time and we're above that. I hear the Lions helped out in Brisbane as well, so hats of to them for that.

Another brain ...more than likely an AFL fan that needs enlightenment. Last yr AFL incidents...50 Last yr NRL incidents...12 2011. AFL so far...8 NRL so far...0 Last yr the AFL angels outstipped us by 4 to 1 this yr they've gone up another level...& doubled productivity. The NRL has seen there was a problem & tried to rectify it...& is getting results. The AFL wants to ignore it ,& look at the results. I believe the only two players before the courts at the moment are AFL players...(Fev & Lovett.) Says it all really Now you have had your lesson on real life outside Victoria...stick to the topic, instead of posting crap. A big thankyou to all sportspeople who chipped in to help .. From a proud QLDER

Note the AFL has made noise last week about getting something done for flood victims at some stage, but nothing seems to have come from it. Why have they not got in like the NRL boys and why doesn't the media have a shot at them for doing so little? RedB. Please answer. :)

Yep I feel the same. I'd like to imagine that the players aren't the ones making the big deal of it but the PR types in the offices that can't resist the promotion.

Great to see sports stars & teams getting in and lending a hand. QLD Reds & Broncos have been out there from day 1, I'm sure the AFL and others have also. No one is above or unaffected by this disaster. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

I fully support the clubs for so doing, but just get on with it.Everyone is putting in an effort. I just can't get comfortable (even though I am a rl supporter),with the my code is doing this etc"at times like this,as it may look like a PR..Let it come out later what has been done by whom. Now is the time for action, not publicity IMO. I saw Wally Lewis helping a group out,the TV company did not say this is King Wally. He was treated just like another concerned citizen .

Players from the state QRL comps have also been getting together and helping the disaster relief effort since back in December. Rugby League really is the sporting life blood of Queensland.

Amazing that the stereotypes that we all know about in Rugby League can be banished by doing this kind of stuff. NRL players spend over 22,000 hours in community in 2010 16/12/2010 4:07:35 PM NRL players have been busy off the field bringing cheer to hundreds of sick children in the countdown to Christmas, capping a memorable year for rugby league’s One Community which has seen players spend over 22,000 hours caring for and inspiring those in the community. The third and final NRL Players' Charity Christmas Party for 2010 was held in Melbourne yesterday, marking the end of a bumper year of community activities including charity and hospital visits, school reading sessions, coaching clinics and junior carnivals.
