When the Chicago Bears beat the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday’s playoff game in snowy Chicago, Jay Cutler, the Bears’ quarterback, threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns, matching a playoff record set 57 years ago.
The Bears’ defense was irresistible scoring on three of its first four possessions. Now they’ll play old rivals, the Green Bay Packers, who burned Atlanta in their playoff by 27 points, for the right to contest the Super Bowl.
The Bears and the Packers represent one of the great rivalries in sports having played each other 181 times. Old timers talk about past Packers greats such as Bart Starr, Paul Horning and man-mountain Ray Nitschke, while Bears’ fans champion Walter Payton, Gale Sayers and ferocious linebacker Dick Butkus.
Two elderly rugby stalwarts, Aussie Rex Goodwin and Kiwi Colin Taylor, both of whom spent many years in the States, agree that had Sayers played international rugby for either country, behind a first-rate pack, he would have scored a hat trick of tries every test.
