Time for Sydney FC to bring back the bling

By John Davidson / Roar Guru

With the transfer of Alex Brosque to the J-League finally confirmed, Sydney FC needs to think long and hard about its next signing. The issue for Sydney, as most people probably realise, is that it is not enough just to win games but they have to play entertaining football and they need big names to build the club’s profile.

Sydney’s signing of Dwight Yorke in season one was a success on and off the field. Now they need to pull off a similar coup to get the crowds back to the SFS. It won’t be enough to bring a player similar to Brosque in profile, talent and marketability. They need a huge name that will guarantee column inches and get people talking.

In recent times it has been other clubs that have drummed up interest with talk of potential signings, like the Newcastle Jets with Michael Owen/Paul Scholes/Kevin Phillips etc. This needs to be Sydney’s domain. No other club in the A-League faces more competition in the marketplace.

Sydney needs to sign an Owen or another entertaining, attacking player to bolster both their front-line and their public profile. In the past few years it has been Major League Soccer in the US that has captured some big names in European football – like Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg and David Beckham. Sydney needs to complete a comparable transfer.

Who could they potentially bring in? Spanish star Raul Gonzalez is now plying his trade for Schalke in Germany. The Real Madrid icon is 33 and would be a great fit in the A-League. Likewise, former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is now playing in Germany. He’s 34 and would be a star attraction.

Whether Sydney is able to pull off these sorts of transfers is hard to stay. It would be far from easy. But Sydney needs to think big. They need to sell Australia, sell the lifestyle and beauty of Sydney as a place to live to get these kinds of players interested. Maybe they could use Aussies who have played overseas to leverage their contacts, like Mark Bosnich.

Whatever they do, Sydney needs to make their next signing a massive one or drab crowds will become the norm at the SFS and their media profile will sink even lower.

I think every club needs to try and bring in famous, world-class players to boost the A-League's profile. Sydney more than most. Another good candidate for a signing would be Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero. 36 years old and still setting the Serie A alight with Juve. I'm not sure how long he is contracted to Juve for, but he would be a massive coup if he could be enticed down under.

Ryan Giggs has resigned with Man Utd for next season. It looks he might do a Maldini and play for Man Utd till he's 40.

Agreed that Bling FC is needed. Necessary evil perhaps? Ryan Giggs would be ultimate, but think he's signed another 1 year deal with ManU already? Ruud van Nistelrooy is a great suggestion. Although he's more a goal poacher than a goal creator? Perhaps in this league he'd do both..

Yes, agreed, I wish him all the best. It would be great to have a recent socceroo work all the way up to a Manager position in an overseas comp.

Great news for Popovic. We need more Aussie managers getting European experience. Its arguably the only way we'll have an Aussie experienced enough to take over the Socceroos. I think Nick Theodorakopoulos also had a season coaching in Greece a while back.

That's good news actually He's a step away from being one of the few Australian managing a decent sized european club. Now that I think about it. Has there been any australian manager in our history who was able to make a career in Europe? I know ange postecoglu had a short career with a Greek club and that's about it. Arnold was link to NAC Breda but couldn't make it due to license issue (although now he is qualified to coach in europe) Popovic could become a pioneer for Australian coach if he sticks around at Crystal Palace

Great suggestion. It would be a bold grab, but they should at least try. Having Giggs in the A-League would be a huge boon for the whole competition.

Although I'd hate to have to cheer against him, I have two words for Sydney FC ... RYAN GIGGS.
