Matt Giteau signs with French club Toulon

By The Roar / Editor

The rumours have been confirmed: Matt Giteau has signed with French Rugby club Toulon for the 2012 season. Giteau will join the cashed-up club following the Rugby World Cup.

He has carefully chosen the dates for his Toulon contract, penning an 18-month deal which ensures he is able to return to Australia for the British and Irish Lions tour in Australia in 2013.

He joins veteran five-eighth Jonny Wilkinson at the club, who re-signed in recent weeks, along with ex-Wallaby George Smith.

The move comes as Giteau takes up the captaincy of the Brumbies for the first time this year, ahead of the team’s first game of the Super Rugby season against the Chiefs on Saturday, February 19th at Canberra Stadium.

Despite the impending departure of Giteau, the ARU has managed to avoid a mass exodus of players following the World Cup, with Stephen Moore, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Drew Mitchell and Ben Alexander all re-signing with Australian Rugby for two years, ensuring a strong squad for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour.

To call Gits over rated shows a lack of knowledge or is just tall poppy syndrome. By the end of the year the bloke is likely to have played 100 tests, 100 plus super rugby games and he has a super rugby title and a John Eales medal in his cupboard. Not too many can claim that. But the most important thing is that all the players in all the teams he has played in WANT him in their team at provincial and national level. They know who they want next to them in the heat of the battle. Great he has been made skip whilst Hoilsey is coming back from injury. I reckon he will lift as a result and so will his team. Hope he heads to france with another couple awards/trophys on his mantlepiece. Well deserved.

Force problems all came from the many lies around built around the firepower scandal and John Mitchell’s erratic temperament… Giteaus' presence brought players to the Force, talented prospects which would have gone elsewhere... It’s not fair to blame him for these misfortunes which were beyond his control... look to the foundation CEO would be a start…

"When did Perth become a suburb of Canberra?" I doubt very much he would have gone to Perth without the lure of Firepower money.......oh that's right it didn't actually exist.....hence his return to his old stomping ground.

"Gits is a Canberra boy through and through" When did Perth become a suburb of Canberra? "world class player" I don't know about that. He was very good at times but an instinct player with a nifty step and acceleration through gaps. He was always best with Larkham who attacked the line and opened up the gaps that Giteau could exploit. He has never looked as good as when he played between Larkham and Mortlock. Still, you don't get to 91+ tests on tehr merits of your hairstyle alone (unless your name is Percy) and he has been a good servant to Australian rugby for many years, albeit with a waning oof his form since Larkham then Mortlock ceased playing beside him. I wouldn't pick him in an Australian team right now but I don't begrudge his 91 tests and wish him all the best. I would be happy to see him come back with the skills and attitude to get back into the Wallabies but for a relatively small player who relies on speed, I suspect that he would struggle at the international level in two years time.

Wow, considering Argentina had all those World class players, I'd have thought they'd be a much better team than they were. I stand by my position, I honestly don't see how Giteau would be rated higher than Mauger, Greenwood or De Villiers for consistent performance. The only thing he has over them is longevity.

Hopefully Robbie will get the message and drop this devisive self serving prima donna has been all together. The Force has been a lot happier since he left and the Wallabies will be too.

Disapproving Jerry read and grumble... http://www.theroar.com.au/2010/01/07/giteau-only-australian-in-rugby-worlds-team-of-decade/ Giteau only Wallaby in Rugby Team of Decade Australian Matt Giteau is the sole Wallaby named in Rugby World magazine’s team of the decade. The 27-year-old was named in the centres for the team, which is skippered by England’s 2003 World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson. The English magazine named Ireland skipper Brian O’Driscoll as the overall player of the decade, ahead of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw – the only player to win the IRB award twice. Giteau being the only Wallaby in the magazine’s team of the decade means Australia have the same number of representatives as minnows Italy, one, and three less players named than Argentina. New Zealand has four players named, world champions South Africa three and England four including Johnson and star five-eighth Jonny Wilkinson. Rugby World’s team of the decade (15-1): Mils Muliaina (NZL), Jason Robinson (ENG), Brian O’Driscoll (IRL), Matt Giteau (AUS), Shane Williams (WAL), Dan Carter (NZL), Agustin Pichot (ARG), Sergio Parisse (ITA), Richie McCaw (NZL), Richard Hill (ENG), Martin Johnson (ENG capt), Victor Matfield (RSA), Carl Hayman (NZL), John Smit (RSA), Gethin Jenkins (WAL). Res: Rodrigo Roncero (ARG), Mario Ledesma (ARG), Sylvain Marconnet (FRA), Juan-Martin Fernandez Lobbe (ARG), Fourie Du Preez (RSA), Jonny Wilkinson (ENG), Yannick Jauzion (FRA), Juan Martin Hernandez (ARG)

Good result for Gits as there are a lot of youngsters coming through. Hope he makes a sh!tload of cash as only can happen in an international game, though I worry about what the Brumbies will look like in 2012. Any idea what Brumbies memberships look like this year as I see the Reds have snagged 11,000 so far... He has been a ( well paid) loyal servant of Aus rugby for a long time.. Anyone mention his first touch of the Gilbert against England at Twickers? A horrid knock on!!! All the best

Well, perhaps absurd is a bit over the top but I'm surprised anyone would really rate Giteau as a better player over that decade than the likes of Aaron Mauger, Will Greenwood, Jean De Villiers or even Ma'a Nonu. And having googled that "Team of the Decade" it seems a bit off in its selections - 5 Argentinians for a start?

What's absurd Jerry is the armchair critics you find on The Roar think they have a better understanding of the players and the game than the panel of ex-international players and coaches that decide these teams. It will always be subjective but it shows the respect some are given in the game.

I find it unreal to read the Brumbies are Kow-towing down to him by making him captain. He's their most senior player. One of the most senior players in S15. Why wouldn't you draw on that experience? Who else would you give it to? Yes it's true, he handled not getting the Wallabies captaincy from Deans poorly. Consideringit was given to a guy that had left Australian shores to play in Ireland whilst he stay true to his country can you blame him for being a little cheesed off. It's not as though Rocky was a Farr-Jones, J. Eales inspirational type skipper Gits is a Canberra boy through and through so it makes perfect sense. And he only had the job until Hoiles gets back. Or is it better to give the potential 2-week stand-in position to someone with far less experience. I tell you, some of you guys need to take the 'I hate Giteau' glasses off for a second and actually look at the decision in a logical way. He was their best player in the trail against the Canes by a long shot. He's has been and has the potential to still be a world class player so why not treat him with some respect and let him feel like he's still worth something. cause if he is reading most of these posts he must be wondering where he's gone wrong in the 100 odd test that he's played for us. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to bust your body up each game if this is the thanks you'll receive. What posible satisfaction can some of you get from slandering him the way you do. The mind boggles.
